Wallpaper has a special way of bringing warmth, pattern and personality to a room. We currently have one wallpapered space — our powder bath features navy-and-white whale wallpaper — and it adds a surprising amount of character. I can easily imagine patterned paper in our future guest room or a small guest bath, and I’ve even pictured a grasscloth running down the upstairs hallway once our remodel and flooring are finished.
After living through the tough job of stripping paper from an older home, I understand why many people once resisted the wallpaper comeback. We removed so much wallpaper from our 1930s English Tudor that I swore I’d never do it again. Still, when chosen carefully for the right space, wallpaper remains one of my favorite ways to add visual interest and a sense of place.
If you’re considering wallpaper, think about how pattern, scale and color will work with your furniture and natural light. Small prints can make a cozy room feel layered; a bold, larger-scale design can become the focal point in a simple space. Textured papers like grasscloth create subtle depth without overwhelming a room. And in smaller rooms — such as powder baths, guest baths or compact hallways — wallpaper is a delightful way to make a memorable statement.
Below are a few inspiring rooms that showcase different approaches to wallpaper: from soft, painterly florals and fresh, modern motifs to classic patterns and textured natural grasscloth. Each example highlights how wallpaper can complement color palettes, accentuate architectural details, and create a welcoming, finished look.
Sunday Strolls + Scrolls is a series that gathers interiors and exteriors I enjoyed while browsing online. I seek spaces that feel like a small sanctuary — places you might discover on a peaceful walk, in a garden stroll, or during a Sunday open house. My hope is these images and ideas feel calming and inspiring as you plan projects for your own home.
