AAs we decorate our new house, I return to a few guiding principles that help create a warm, comfortable home. Whether this is your first house or your seventh, three essentials will always serve you well: authenticity, personality and flexibility.

First and foremost, your home should be authentic to you and your family.
Authenticity means designing a home that reflects what matters to you in this season of life. When you begin from that place, it becomes easier to decide where to invest your money and what to pass on. The good news: you don’t need a large budget to live authentically or stylishly.
Think about your daily life. Do you have kids? Pets? Work from home? We have two dogs, so my current decorating choices lean pet-friendly. We’ve added cozy dog beds in several rooms, choosing options that blend with our decor instead of standing out as pet-only items.
When I spotted a dog bed at Ross in a fabric I loved, it felt like a decorating win: it looked great in our rooms and the pups loved it. Priced at $22, it was an affordable choice that didn’t compromise style. Stores like Ross often carry the same brands as larger retailers at lower prices, making it easier to style your home without overspending.
Authenticity never goes out of style, and layering a home carefully over time will help you build a beautiful space without breaking the bank.
Secondly, your home should showcase your personality.
You’ll enjoy your home most when it reflects who you are. What colors lift your spirits? Which patterns make you smile? What stories or memories do you want your decor to evoke? While hand-me-downs and budget pieces have their place, always include items that feel distinctly yours.

Choose accessories that tell your story. These three glass floats I found were affordable and on trend, but more importantly they remind me of childhood summers and our life near the water. Since our home overlooks Puget Sound, coastal touches naturally make me happy.
Identify the pieces that truly spark joy and use them as starting points. Even a few meaningful accents can shape the mood of a room and keep you inspired every time you walk in.

Lastly, incorporate items that offer flexibility.
Invest in pieces that adapt to multiple uses so you save money and space over time. Most of us move or shift needs several times in life; choosing versatile furniture helps your home transition with you. This is especially important in smaller spaces where each item should do more than one job.

Hooks are one of my favorite flexible solutions. They’re affordable, easy to install and highly functional. In a home where closet space is limited, a few well-placed hooks can make daily life easier and keep spaces tidy.

In our tiny guest room we installed a row of six hooks. Guests can hang a purse, an overnight bag, a cosmetic pouch, a coat or a robe, keeping belongings off the floor and out of reach of our dogs. Small additions like this make a home both more welcoming and more practical.

Look for classic staple pieces that serve many purposes. I love these bamboo-style nesting tables because they can be nested to save space or separated to function as extra seats, plant stands or surfaces for food and drinks when entertaining. Choosing durable, multipurpose items ensures they remain useful across many rooms and seasons.
My home is still evolving, and I look forward to sharing more of the progress. Thanks for following along on this decorating journey toward a comfortable, authentic home.
