Throughout 2019 and 2020, during some challenging seasons, I wrote and photographed a new book, A Lovely Life. I’ve noticed a pattern: I often write books during hard times or right after them. That makes sense—life isn’t always picture-perfect. Some days feel lovely, and others do not. As I finished this book in 2020, I joked more than once about calling it A Not-So-Lovely Life. But that tension is exactly why A Lovely Life needed to exist—for me and for others who need encouragement.
I’ve always wanted to create and live in a beautiful home, not as a showplace but as a sanctuary for every season. When my perspective is off, my expectations and reality rarely match. The internet can intensify that mismatch with endless highlight reels and images of perfection that are often unsustainable. Scrolling for inspiration can leave me exhausted and discouraged.

My aim is to cultivate a home where everyday life feels meaningful. That requires appreciating ordinary days, being present in the moment, and savoring daily routines. Rather than always striving for more, I find the most peace when I slow down and notice the small, steady rhythms of life and season.
If you sometimes feel you don’t have or do “enough,” this book is written for you. It’s a reminder and an encouragement to fellow homebodies that a lovely life is attainable. With small shifts in attention and intention, every day can feel better.

Do you recognize the spot chosen for the cover photograph? For me it was more than a charming scene; it was a sacred, meaningful place where life slowed and beauty could be savored. Every home I’ve lived in has taught me something. The years in this one offered opportunities to look beyond challenges and intentionally create moments of beauty through gratitude in every season.

In A Lovely Life I share encouragement, simple ideas, and photographs meant to inspire you to put on your own “rose colored glasses” and embrace the beauty around you. That doesn’t mean the house will be perfect or that life will be free of hardships; some seasons are messy and difficult. Still, choosing to romanticize ordinary rituals helps us become more intentional, present, and grateful.
It’s seeing the little gifts in front of us that make life lovely.
