It’s a Christmas miracle — the kitchen has finally been painted. After nearly six months of work, this stage of the remodel is complete and I couldn’t be more thrilled.
I was so eager to see the progress that my daughter Courtney and I snuck into the kitchen after dark to take a few photos. The doorways were still taped with plastic and paper, so we slipped in quickly and quietly for a brief peek. We were trying not to disturb anything, tiptoeing around the taped openings and keeping the visit short and careful so we wouldn’t disturb the paint.
Despite our stealthy approach, our dog Jack had other plans. From the other doorway we heard a loud rustling and tearing of plastic — Jack was pawing and clawing his way through the taped barrier, forcing his head through to get a look. We tried to keep him out, as shown in one of the photos, but he was determined to get a firsthand peek at the newly painted space. Eventually we had to barricade the opening with chairs and tell him he’d have to wait. No dog prints allowed.
Keep in mind these are late-night iPhone photos, so the image quality isn’t ideal and the plastic and paper coverings obscure much of the detail. The cabinets may look darker in the pictures than they are in real life — they’re not actually black. Still, it’s fun to get a sneak peek at the transformation even with the coverings in place.
The painting covers the kitchen and extends through the family room, top to bottom. In person the new paint looks incredible — rich and beautifully finished. It’s so impressive that I’m pretty sure I’ll never attempt trim painting myself again. Once the paper and tape come down I’ll share clearer photos of the finished work.
Although the painting schedule pushed back our Christmas decorating plans for a couple of weeks, I’m really happy this phase was completed just in time. A big thank-you to a reader, Barbara, for recommending local painters who were able to fit us in right before the holiday.
Soon our stockings can be hung by the chimney with care and we’ll be back on track with holiday decorating.
One more update: I’m excited to finally add the new cabinet hardware. I picked up bin pulls for the drawers during a sale and have a collection of gold and mercury glass knobs for the cabinets. They’ve been waiting in a box for a while, and I can’t wait to see how those finishing touches pull the look together.
For now, that’s the latest from the kitchen and family room. I’ll share more photos once the coverings are removed and the final details are in place.
