II recently came across a naturally styled beach cottage decorated with tasteful pops of red on BHG. The home blends organic textures and coastal charm with striking red accents, and I found the look both inviting and inspiring. While emerald green is trending, I remain fond of green—but I’m especially drawn to how a little red enlivens a calm, neutral palette.
In my own home I’ve started adding small touches of red again. I never use much—usually a pillow, a throw, or a single accessory—because too much red can overpower a room. In small doses, though, various tones from red through warm oranges add warmth and visual interest without disrupting the overall balance. Paired with natural materials—weathered wood, wicker, linen—the red feels fresh and relaxed rather than loud.
The key to using red in cottage-style decor is restraint. Use it as an accent to highlight focal points: a chair, a set of cushions, a piece of artwork, or kitchen accessories. Combine it with soft neutrals, creamy whites, and gentle greens to preserve a serene, beachy atmosphere. Mixing in textures like slipcovers, woven rugs, and distressed surfaces helps the red blend into the scheme rather than dominate it.
I’m also working on a new post about my own home paint colors and overall palette, so soon I’ll share a clearer picture of how I’m using these hues throughout my rooms. And I’ll be showing a before-and-after of my kitchen cabinet paint this week—so look for that update if you enjoy small, impactful makeovers.
