Fall is nearly here — are you ready to create a cozy corner for the season? Some people welcome autumn with pumpkins on the mantel; I prefer rearranging furniture. However you choose to mark the change, follow what inspires you. No strict rules, just a friendly suggestion to get started.
2020 has brought many unexpected challenges through the spring and summer, and it’s understandable to feel overwhelmed. If you’ve had to make difficult decisions or adapt to a new routine, know you’re doing the best you can. Be gentle with yourself. Change can be hard, but it can also open the door to comforting, restorative practices at home.
I’m reluctant to lose the daily sunshine of summer, but I’m looking forward to creating a nurturing home base for our family as the weather cools. One ritual that always grounds me is carving out a little cozy corner where I can begin the day with calm and intention — a self-care spot. Years ago I wrote about a favorite pink chair that served as my quiet escape when my kids were small, and that need for peace and a private moment hasn’t changed as they’ve grown.

This week I began preparing for fall by rearranging furniture to create a peaceful morning spot. I’ll share how I use it during our Fall Nesting series starting September 1. In addition to seasonal decorating ideas, the series will cover how to use your self-care corner and daily routines to support well-being through autumn.
To kick off Fall Nesting, here are simple, practical steps to create your own cozy self-care corner. If you set one up, I’d love to see it!
How to Create Your Cozy Self-Care Corner
- Choose your most comfortable chair. Move furniture you already have so your favorite chair is in a quiet, welcoming spot — ideally somewhere peaceful in the morning. I positioned mine near the fireplace for a warm, calm start to the day.
- Pick a special fall mug or two. Make morning coffee or tea a ritual instead of a rush. A special mug encourages slowing down and savoring the moment. I recently added a “Fall Feels” mug to my collection and find it makes the routine feel more intentional.
- Add a small stool or table beside the chair. A low stool or side table is essential for holding a mug, a journal, or a book. It keeps everything you need within easy reach and helps the space feel complete.
- Include a cozy throw blanket. A soft blanket is a must for autumn mornings. Even if your climate stays warm, a throw adds texture and visual warmth to the space. Keep it draped over the chair for both function and style.
- Keep a journal and a notebook handy. Use a journal for reflection or guided prompts and a notebook for lists, ideas, or plans. A favorite pen makes the practice inviting and encourages consistency in your morning rituals.
- Place a fresh plant nearby. A simple plant on a nearby table brings life and freshness to your corner, even when fresh flowers are scarce. It’s an easy way to uplift the space.
- Consider a quality diffuser and pure plant oils. A diffuser with clean essential oils can help establish calming routines and support wellness. If you enjoy aromatherapy, place a diffuser nearby and choose scents that encourage relaxation and focus. Using oils can become a gentle daily habit that enhances the atmosphere of your self-care corner.

Social media can be noisy and stressful. If that feels heavy right now, consider joining me here on the blog each morning instead. We can sit in our cozy corners with a warm cup in hand and talk about fall nesting, homemaking rhythms, and finding simple joys at home. I’d love for you to join me.
