Make your home cozier with simple, non-electric wall lights and battery-operated candles.

I love quick, affordable updates that add warmth and character. In a recent fireplace reveal I mentioned my new sconces and promised more details—so here they are. This short, inexpensive project transformed the feeling of our space almost immediately.

I’d been searching for sconces like these for a long time to add more personality to our home. I finally found a style that felt right. In many older houses there are small wall lights tucked into unexpected corners, and I love those charming, layered details.

These candleholders are made from iron or another sturdy metal and are extremely easy to install—just a screw or nail is all you need. For safety and convenience we use battery-operated taper candles and secure them with museum putty so they stay in place. The whole process took less than ten minutes, but the cozy impact was immediate.

Our battery-operated taper candles include a remote and timer option, which makes it effortless to turn them on for an extra touch of glow each evening. The convenience has made lighting them a nightly habit.

I installed four identical candle sconces around the house. One black sconce in the hallway adds depth to the layered lighting there, and ties in with other black accents like hardware and barn lights. The result feels cohesive and thoughtfully layered.

A few months ago we added gold battery-operated picture lights above a hallway cabinet and lined the cabinet back with peel-and-stick wallpaper for a simple makeover. These small lighting additions continue that theme—an easy way to add character without rewiring.

I’m officially hooked on faux wall lights and candle sconces. They’re low-cost, low-effort, and give a big return in atmosphere.

The fourth sconce sits to the left of the dining room entrance in a cozy corner of the living room. I enjoy how it looks there and how it contributes to the room’s ambiance.

So there you have it: charming, affordable wall lights without hiring an electrician. Simple updates like these are my kind of decorating—easy to do and instantly rewarding.

Battery-operated candles I’ve ordered recently:

A few reliable styles I like include tealights, taper candles, and flameless pillar candles with flickering wicks. These options offer a realistic glow and many include remotes or timers for added convenience.

If you try this lighting idea at home, I’d love to see! Tag me on Instagram or share a photo in our Facebook community.

If you want extra sparkle without installing wall lights, copper string lights with a remote are another cozy option—the slow-fade setting is especially lovely and keeps a warm, twinkling feeling going long after the holidays.
