Years ago I discovered that moving through the seasons at a slower pace makes life—and home—feel calmer and less frantic. Longtime readers of The Inspired Room know how much I love fall; Fall Nesting has been a central theme on the blog for the past fifteen years. Still, I’ve always favored a slower, more natural approach to seasonal decorating.
We are in no hurry, so pumpkins and full-on autumn décor will wait. There’s a time for everything.
You can read more about embracing a slower, more intentional rhythm in my book A Lovely Life. I also offer a downloadable seasonal planner that helps you make the most of each season. Print it this month to outline your goals and priorities for fall, then use it as you move through the season.
We’ll have a special announcement at the end of this year’s Annual Fall Nesting Series, so be sure to subscribe to our emails so you don’t miss it!
Why slow down? Finding and settling into a comfortable rhythm improves both the state of our home and our state of mind. Steady, sustainable progress and a consistent level of beauty and comfort are preferable to either stagnation or living in constant chaos.

Rather than always yearning for the next season, I prefer to give each season its moment. Savoring the present season helps us enjoy it fully. As much as we may look forward to pumpkins, spiced lattes, and cozy sweaters, there’s no need to rush. August and September offer their own special pleasures, and October will arrive with its own delights when the time comes.
Use this month as a gentle transition into fall. That might mean preparing, planning, or making small changes rather than rushing to display every autumn item. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with putting out pumpkins if that brings you joy—it’s simply about creating a timeline that feels life-giving and sustainable for you. Each year and each season may look different, and that’s okay.
Slowing down between seasons reminds us to breathe and be present. We aren’t behind, nor must we hurry to get ahead. There are many meaningful things we can do within the current season. A measured pace gives us time to anticipate and plan for the things we look forward to while still savoring today. We don’t need to cram the next season’s expectations into the current one.

I’ve written about a slower seasonal rhythm across the blog and in my books, and you can explore these ideas more deeply in A Lovely Life. When decorating and household routines follow a mindful, steady rhythm, your home stays welcoming, peaceful, and joyful throughout the year.
That steady approach lets you be intentional without becoming exhausted. You can remain rooted in the beauty of the present season while making gentle preparations to savor the next one fully. The result is a home that feels both lived-in and lovingly tended.
