One of my favorite parts of decorating is leaning into the season. You don’t need a full room overhaul to feel a fresh vibe—just a few well-chosen updates can make a space feel new. We aren’t heading to a tropical island this summer, but with bright sun and warm days right here at home, I wanted our bedroom to feel like a relaxed, sunlit retreat. I shopped Walmart Home for several affordable, versatile pieces that helped bring that feeling to life.
The items I picked are playful and flexible, so they work in different rooms and across seasons. Small accessory swaps are an easy, budget-friendly way to change the tone of a room without committing to expensive or permanent changes.

Here are my six favorite tips for decorating a summer bedroom:

1. Decorate with pieces you love, but be open to trying something new. I replaced a simple white lamp with a floral white ceramic lamp topped with a teal shade. The quirky color and shape immediately gave the room personality. Trying one standout piece can shift the whole mood and is an easy way to express your style without overhauling everything.

After bringing the lamp home I even noticed similar high-end versions elsewhere—proof that a great find doesn’t have to cost a fortune. The key is to know your style, be willing to experiment, and act when you find something that speaks to you.

2. It’s fine to make a space pretty now, even if you plan to change it later. I added a botanical wall art set to a wall that had felt uninspired for a long time. Hanging art can feel like a big decision, but it doesn’t have to be permanent. A quick update with colorful, lively pieces can instantly finish a space and boost your daily mood.

3. Add a touch of moody color for contrast. Summer doesn’t require everything to be pale and airy. A deeper hue can create contrast and visual depth. I used a faux suede peacock-colored pillow to echo the lamp’s tones while adding a richer accent that will also transition well into fall.

4. Choose versatile layers. I selected a white chenille duvet and sham set that acts like a lightweight coverlet but can also be filled with a faux-down insert for extra warmth. Pieces that work multiple ways make it easy to adapt a room through the seasons without buying separate bedding for each one.

5. Don’t underestimate texture. A round wicker tray adds natural texture and warmth. Textural pieces—rattan, wicker, woven fibers—bring an organic, layered look that feels relaxed and inviting. A small tray can work on a bed, dresser, or even hung as wall decor.

6. Pick pillow covers with zippers. I chose a blue-and-white patterned pillow set with zippered covers. Zippers let you use plush inserts for a full, comfortable look and make it easy to swap or store covers between seasons. Pillow covers are a simple, cost-effective way to refresh a room.
These pillows looked great in the living room as well, showing how flexible accent pieces can move around the house and keep your decor feeling cohesive.
