Designer Katie Rosenfeld (Michael J. Lee Photography)
Welcome to Day Two of my 31 Days of Falling For Fall series!
Throughout this series I’ll highlight rooms, displays, and tablescapes that feel especially cozy or inspiring for autumn. Some spaces may not look like the traditional warm, autumnal palette at first glance, but thoughtful design choices—texture, finishes, and layered elements—create an inviting atmosphere. Katie Rosenfeld’s dining room is a perfect example.
Though the room is predominantly white with cool blue accents, it reads as warm and comfortable.
How did she create that balance?
Here are five design takeaways that stood out:
1. The teal-peacock chairs are upholstered in soft velvet, which immediately adds a sense of comfort and warmth. Rich texture in upholstery can make a cool color feel much cozier.
2. The light fixture features a warm gold tone. Warm metals like brass and gold bring a subtle glow and sophistication that silver tones don’t, helping to warm the overall palette.
3. Fabric lampshades on the chandelier diffuse the light, softening harsh bulbs and creating a gentler, more intimate ambiance.
4. Carpet runners on the stairs and an area rug in the dining room introduce additional layers and texture. Even with beautiful wood floors, added textiles increase comfort and make the space feel lived-in.
5. Natural wood elements—the dining table and stair railing—provide a warm contrast to painted white woodwork and painted furniture, grounding the room with organic color and depth.
What details in this room caught your eye?
