5 Cozy Ways to Hygge This Winter

5 Ways to Hygge in 2017 - The Inspired Room

In our fast-paced, often overwhelming lives, many of us long for less stress and more simple, sustained joy. As we begin a new year, the possibilities feel exciting. I have many hopes for the months ahead. I write about the importance of creating a cozy, authentic home because I believe a mindful approach to daily life enriches our well-being. More than just an idea on a page, it is a practice I try to live every day.

We tend to find the deepest pleasure in ordinary moments. When home is intentionally comfortable and nurturing, it changes our outlook and brings more calm and contentment into daily life.

5 Ways to Hygge & Love the Home You Have

Your home should inspire you.

You may have heard of Hygge, the Danish concept that values coziness, presence and comfort—ideas that echo the approach I share here. Encouraging people to find more well-being and joy at home was the reason I started The Inspired Room ten years ago. It’s been a joy to connect with others who love the same things, whether they call it Hygge or simply enjoy being at home.

If you’re eager to refresh your home or rekindle your love of making a cozy life, you’re in the right place. Creating a warm, intentional home is what we do best here.

Welcome if you’re new here. I’ve also written books about simplifying and loving the home you have. Those projects focus on being deliberate with what we keep and creating spaces that support peace and purpose. The goal is to make room for what brings you true joy and to let go of what distracts or drains you.

Bring it on, this year—we’re ready.

Five ways to Hygge and fall in love with home-creating

1. Make more room for joy.

At some point many of us believed that acquiring more things would make life happier. We hold onto items thinking we might use them someday or because objects carry sentimental value. But the more we keep, the less we appreciate each piece. When our surroundings are crowded, the small pleasures are smothered by excess.

To truly enjoy our home, we must stop equating abundance of stuff with happiness. Making intentional space for the things we love allows those things to shine.

Start small: clear a drawer, a shelf, or a corner so you can immediately see and appreciate what remains. Remove the items that no longer serve you, and return only what you genuinely enjoy. Creating breathing room in your home makes daily life feel lighter and more joyful.

2. Intentionally seek simplicity.

Simplicity in our home and routines invites more joy. Before beginning a new project, moving, or making a big change, ask honest questions about what you truly need and what will bring the most benefit. Look for the simplest option that achieves your goal with the least stress and clutter.

Sometimes bigger efforts are necessary to reach a simpler, more comfortable outcome. If that’s the case, be willing to do the hard work while keeping the ultimate aim in mind: fewer complications, more ease. Consider your time, budget, and energy before committing, and choose the path that supports a calmer, more meaningful home life.

3. Feel more connected by disconnecting.

We live in an era where online life can easily overshadow present-moment living. While digital connections can be valuable, too much time online often fragments our focus and reduces our ability to be fully present at home.

To nurture creativity, calm and genuine connection, practice regular periods of intentional disconnection. Put devices away for a set time each day and be fully present with family, tasks, or quiet moments. This discipline can reduce overwhelm and increase a sense of connection to your home and the people in it.

4. Create serene spaces to inspire your life.

Home should be a refuge that reflects and supports your family’s life, not a storage space for unused items. Commit to self-care and well-being by clearing clutter and designing inviting areas that encourage relaxation and togetherness.

When you create cozy, comfortable spots—simple seating nooks, tidy surfaces, calming color palettes—you make it easier for everyone to enjoy the home. Keep these areas free from chaos by removing what doesn’t belong and replacing it with things that add comfort and beauty. A serene environment invites healthier routines and more restful living.

5. Welcome others into your home.

Even for introverted homebodies, sharing your space can be a source of great joy. Hospitality reminds us that a cozy home is meant to be lived in and enjoyed with others. Inviting friends or family over can be a gentle motivation to make your space more welcoming and comfortable.

Your home does not need to be perfect to host guests—perfection is stressful and unnecessary. Focus on warmth and hospitality: a comfortable seat, a thoughtful drink or snack, and a relaxed atmosphere. These simple gestures create meaningful moments for both you and your visitors.
