Has it been a while since you refreshed your master bedroom? Autumn is the perfect season to make it cozier. I always look forward to crawling into a warm, inviting bed when the weather turns cold, so refreshing my bedroom is high on my list right now.

Since moving into our home I’ve been using the same bedding for nearly eight years. It’s well made and classic, so it has held up beautifully. Still, after seeing the same pattern for so long I’m ready for a fresh look—something that feels new and energizing without losing comfort.

Even neutral bedding can feel tired after years of the same view. Sometimes all a room needs is one new element to make it feel fresh: a bold pillow, a striking lamp, or a different color palette can instantly change your mood when you walk in.

I have a little habit that helps guide my decorating choices: I walk down the hall and then do a quick double take into a room. If the sight makes me smile, I know the room is working. If I feel indifferent or annoyed, it tells me something needs changing.

If a space makes me grin when I peek in, I feel peaceful and inspired. If it causes a “meh” reaction, I switch something—rearrange, add a new accessory, change a color—until that quick glance brings a smile. It’s a simple, practical way to test whether a room truly pleases you.
This little routine may sound silly, but it’s an effective, almost scientific method for decorating. It helps you be honest about what works and what doesn’t, without overthinking the process.

How to decorate your home in three easy steps. The Inspired Room way.
Step one. Walk down the hall, casually looking around.
Step two. Do a quick double take into each room you pass—note your immediate reaction.
Step three. If what you see delights you, carry on. If it makes you say “meh” or feel indifferent, change something right away and repeat the test until the room makes you smile.
Repeat steps one through three.
The end.
It really is that straightforward. I use this method all the time—it keeps decorating manageable and focused on how a space actually makes you feel.
Fall is the best time to create a cozy nest to curl up in.
Have you done any double takes lately?
This is an updated version of a previous post; if it sounds familiar, I wanted to share it again.
