Yellow Again: Exploring Why Yellow Dominates Design & Fashion

House Beautiful

I’m in a yellow mood.

Maybe it’s the gray, rainy weather outside. I found myself craving a little sunshine indoors, so I gathered some yellow decorating inspiration to brighten the day. If you already live where the sun shines every day, enjoy these ideas anyway—yellow has a way of lifting the spirit and warming a space.

A charming yellow house, shown here dusted with snow, was shared with me years ago by a blogging friend.

I already have touches of yellow in my home because it simply makes me happy.

I’m tempted to add even more—yellow mirrors and lamps have been on my mind lately.

I’m leaning toward painting at least part of my upstairs yellow. I’ve lived with my current palette for a while and, as the house evolved, other colors felt right for the lower level. Time has helped me understand how each space should feel.

The upstairs, however, keeps calling for yellow. It just feels like the right direction. I pay attention to how the home feels, and sometimes it takes time to know exactly what a room needs.

If I had moved faster, the whole house might already be painted. But the slower pace has been beneficial—allowing me to ponder and discover what suits our family and our home.

Letting the house evolve naturally has resulted in choices that feel authentic and right. When I’m patient and listen, the home reveals small nudges—like the recurring urge to add yellow—so I can respond thoughtfully.

So yes, after a lot of thought (and a few hints from my furniture), the upstairs will probably become yellow. I’m ready to give in to it.

How about you?
