Fall is officially here, and with it comes the desire to make home as cozy and welcoming as possible. I’m a true homebody and the change of season prompts me to enhance the atmosphere in simple, meaningful ways. One of the most effective rituals I rely on every autumn and winter is using candles—specifically, unscented, colored battery-operated candles that create warmth without the drawbacks of open flames or synthetic scents.
Shorter, darker days can trigger mixed emotions. As the light fades and clouds return, it’s easy to start dreading the long winter months ahead. For me, creating comforting routines and a cozy environment makes a big difference in how I feel about the season.

I have a number of seasonal decorating habits that help me settle into fall and winter. Soft lighting is one of the most powerful; it instantly shifts the mood in a room. Over the years I’ve found one simple change that consistently improves my outlook: we use candles every single day.
We use candles daily. They aren’t reserved for special occasions. Candles live in the rooms where we spend the most time—on kitchen counters, living room shelves, bedside tables and small nooks. The glow of candles turns a gloomy day into something snug and inviting.

I don’t rely on scented, burning candles anymore. After learning about the potential health impacts of certain candle emissions and because I prefer to avoid open flames, I switched to unscented, battery-operated candles. I still enjoy a pleasant scent in the home, but I use diffusers with pure essential oils when I want fragrance.

Each evening we turn on the candles as part of a simple ritual. The difference is immediate: the room feels warmer, softer, and more intimate. Instead of dreading the shorter days, I look forward to the gentle light that candles bring.
In our current home, natural light is more limited than in our previous house, so artificial light and candlelight play an even bigger role. I place candles in practical spots where we spend time—by the kitchen work area, in the living room, and tucked onto shelves throughout the house. Their presence lifts the mood in subtle but meaningful ways.

Colored candles became a favorite in our old home, especially in wall sconces where the color pops against white walls. There’s no strict meaning behind my color choices; I pick shades that complement the season and the room’s decor. While creamy white candles always have a timeless appeal, moodier colors—deep rusts, warm ambers, and muted blues—add an extra layer of atmosphere.
Even simple white battery votives gain personality when placed in colored glass holders. An amber votive holder, for example, warms the glow and enhances the cozy effect. Layering color, texture and light is what makes a space feel curated and comfortable during the darker months.

If you’re looking to recreate this cozy routine, consider adding several small light sources throughout your living spaces rather than relying on one bright overhead fixture. Grouping candles in clusters, placing a votive in a colored glass holder, or adding a few colored tapers to a mantel all help create layers of light that feel intentional and comforting.

A few of my go-to items include amber glass votive holders, battery-operated votive candles, colored taper sets, and moving-wick taper candles in rust tones. These pieces are functional, safe, and stylistically versatile—perfect for fall and winter decorating.
Wall color in our home is Beach Glass by Benjamin Moore, which provides a calm backdrop that lets candlelight stand out. Small adjustments—like switching to colored, battery-operated candles and arranging them thoughtfully—can transform how you experience the darker months. They bring warmth, comfort, and a sense of ritual that helps the season feel less daunting and more inviting.
