Valentine’s Day Party Ideas + DIY Cake Topper Tutorial

Valentine's Day Ideas

I can’t believe 2014 is already here! If we haven’t met yet, I’m Michaela and I write a monthly entertaining-themed post. Sharing these projects is a joy. It feels like we just rang in the New Year and now I’m excited to share ideas for setting up a playful, feminine Valentine’s Day dessert bar. Time really does fly.

Valentine’s Day is often associated with romantic love, but celebrating close friends can be just as special. With a few thoughtful details you can create a lovely girlfriends’ Valentine’s gathering that’s fun, relaxed, and memorable.

To begin, here’s a quick and easy DIY cake topper you can make in no time.

Materials: paint brush, wooden hearts, chalkboard paint, kabob sticks, tape or glue.

Step 1: Paint the wooden hearts with chalkboard paint. Allow them to dry, then apply a second coat. Let them dry thoroughly for an hour or two.

Step 2: Paint the kabob sticks if you like (I painted mine gold). Trim the sticks to the length you want and attach them to the back of the hearts with tape or glue.

Step 3: Write a message on the chalkboard hearts. I wrote X&O, but you could use initials, a short phrase, or any sweet sentiment.

For a simple favor at your girlfriend party, write a short note, slip it into a red chevron bag, and tie it to a bottle of red or pink nail polish. It’s a small, thoughtful token that’s budget-friendly and cute.

Here’s the full dessert bar setup: cake with the DIY topper, fresh flowers, bottles of Martinelli’s, and pretty glasses. It’s simple to assemble and feels festive. This setup would be perfect for a cozy movie night full of chick-flicks and conversation.

Gluten Free Valentine's Cake

I used a gluten-free boxed chocolate cake (no shame—shortcuts are fine!) and made homemade frosting. Here’s the simple frosting recipe:

3 cups powdered sugar

1 cup butter

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 tablespoons whipping cream

Combine sugar and butter and mix on low until blended, then increase to medium speed and beat for about 3 minutes. Add vanilla and whipping cream and beat on medium for another minute until smooth and creamy.
