Southern Living Spring Decorating
From January through April we see many ideas for decorating around Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter — hearts, clovers and bunnies are everywhere. Those themed decorations are charming, but what if you don’t enjoy overt holiday motifs or it’s past Valentine’s Day and still too early for full-on Easter displays?

Many readers mentioned on my recent “Gearing Up for Spring” post that they struggle with decorating during the in-between season. It’s not winter, but it doesn’t quite feel like spring yet. You might not want Valentine’s colors and you don’t feel drawn to St. Patrick’s Day decorations.
I understand — I feel the same way. When I do decorate for a holiday, I usually keep it subtle and not overly thematic. I do have a soft spot for bunnies and eggs, so a small nod to those elements sometimes slips in, but my focus tends to be on the seasons themselves rather than specific holidays.

So what can you do when you aren’t ready for full spring decorating, but a snowy winter mantel or table feels out of place?

Moss and mushroom accents for early spring

For these transitional weeks I usually add small, natural touches that suggest spring without committing to strong holiday themes. Think branches with delicate buds, a few spring flowers, sprigs of greenery, or a bit of moss. These simple elements bring life and freshness without feeling overly festive.
I love allowing my decor to evolve gradually with the season. Instead of switching from one holiday display to the next, I prefer to layer in subtle seasonal accents and let the room shift naturally over time. It’s a slower, more organic approach that feels relaxed and intentional.

My mantel, for example, stayed simple and neutral through the winter months. Now that the season is changing, I’m ready to introduce a little more life — fresh greens, softer colours, and a few small accents to brighten the space. I don’t plan every detail; I usually let inspiration guide the changes and add pieces as the mood strikes.
Over the next week or two I’ll update the mantel with a few spring touches. I’ll share the result when it comes together — it will be a surprise even to me, as I enjoy letting the decor evolve naturally.
Do you decorate around specific holidays or prefer to style your home according to the season itself? Either approach is perfectly fine.
