Hello! It’s been a while. In case you don’t remember me, I’m Melissa’s oldest daughter, Kylee. I always intend to share updates on the townhouse more often, but life gets busy and time slips away.
If you want quick updates, the easiest place to follow along is Instagram. Since it’s been a long time between blog posts, you can also catch up on my earlier townhouse updates in the archives if you’re new or need a refresher.

Today I’m sharing the latest chapter in the red leather couch saga (you can read the earlier post about that story in my archives). The big news is that, after seven months, my husband and I finally agreed on and brought home a new sofa. I’ve stopped calling it a couch and upgraded to the slightly more elegant “sofa.” This living room has evolved a lot and will likely continue to change over time.

To get rid of the old red couches we made a deal with a friend who wanted them: he would help carry them out and the couches would be his. We ended up removing the sliding door and lowering the couch over the balcony to get them out—definitely not a fun move, but it worked. It was nerve-wracking with less help than when we moved them in, but worth it. The red couches are now happily set up at his place.

Choosing a new sofa wasn’t easy. After years with the bold red pieces, I was eager for something different. My husband Lance and I have very different tastes in furniture, so compromise was essential. After many months of debating (and a period of living without a sofa), we landed on a piece we both liked. The color was the compromise: I lean practical and darker tones, while Lance wanted a lighter shade. Because we have dogs and live in a rainy city, muddy paws are a reality, so we usually cover the cushions with a washable blanket when needed. We’ve had the sofa for about seven months without any major problems so far.

We opted to buy just one sofa instead of replacing both. We didn’t want matching pairs anymore and couldn’t decide on a second seat, so for now we’re borrowing chairs from my mom while we weigh options. I often struggle with selecting art because I like pieces that feel personal. For years I used patterned wrapping paper in frames as temporary filler; recently I decided to paint my own pieces so I can change them whenever I want without spending a lot on artwork that might not feel right long-term.

I didn’t get as many good photos of the pups for this post as I’d hoped, and I know readers love doodle photos, so I included a collage of Bella and Leo enjoying the new sofa. Many of these images are from my Instagram, where they appear often, especially in Stories—feel free to follow along there for more updates from the dogs.

Quick note: If you missed voting on our rug designs, we’d appreciate your help getting them into production. The top ten designs will be produced, and every vote helps. Voting is easy and you can support multiple designs via the links shared in the rug post. We had a great time designing these rugs and thank you for your support.
Until next time!
