In my recent “garden dreaming” newsletter I mentioned we added two new outdoor rocking chairs to our kitchen deck. Now that they’re set up, I wanted to share how they look and how they’ve changed the space.
This week we’ve been focused on clearing out furniture and items we no longer plan to use. We rented a truck and moved a few things — including some Adirondack chairs and a bed — to our daughter Courtney. Downsizing and editing a small outdoor space takes time and experimentation, but it always pays off in the end.
Small decks require a bit of planning to make everything feel comfortable and intentional. After trying a few layouts, my husband and I are excited to spend summer evenings in our new rocking chairs on the backyard deck. It feels cozy and relaxed — maybe a little “grandparent” vibe, but in the best way.
The chairs we chose come in several colors — blue, black, white, gray and a wood tone — and there’s also a non-rocking version of the same design that we use by the fire pit. They’re well made and durable, which matters for outdoor furniture.
I’m glad we picked blue; the color pops against our white deck railings and the curved “wave” detail along the top gives a subtle coastal feel. I’m leaning into a casual coastal-grandma look for this area — relaxed, layered, and comfortable.

I added striped outdoor pillow covers and ordered waterproof inserts for them, which makes the seating both stylish and practical for unpredictable weather.
Below I created a mood board featuring the regular version of these chairs and other garden pieces I love. I also have a fringe umbrella that adds a fun, playful touch and works well with the look.
If you’re part of our HomeBody Gathering Place, we recently shared a tutorial showing how to create mood boards like this. If you missed the lesson, you can find it in the community.
