Welcome my friend, Sandy Coughlin!
Early summer is one of the most enjoyable times for gardening. The air feels fresher, the days are still cool, and everything seems new and promising. Later in the season the heat and weeds can make outdoor work feel like a chore. This is a perfect time to prepare for outdoor entertaining and include the whole family in the process.

If you know guests are coming, involve your kids so chores become teamwork and part of the fun. Here are a few practical tips to make it work:
- Make a short list the day before with clear tasks for each child.
- Give specific time frames for when chores should be completed.
- Show them how to do new tasks so they understand what’s expected.
- Accept that the work may not be perfect and be willing to let them learn.
- Keep it light and enjoyable—talk about the rewards of working together.
- After the event, reflect as a family on what went well and celebrate everyone’s contribution.
One easy and meaningful task is letting children create the centerpiece.

Give them a low vase filled with water and a selection of garden flowers. Simple steps help them succeed:
- Have them choose blooms and snip stems to the same length.
- Encourage balance and color without overcomplicating the design.
- Let them place the flowers in the vase, creating an arrangement they can be proud of.

Children often grow more confident when entrusted with a real task. They learn hospitality, attention to detail, and how satisfying it is to contribute to a shared event.

Teaching kids to help with summer entertaining combines passion and purpose. With simple guidance, even small hands can prepare a table that looks welcoming and personal.
With summer entertaining and yard work, it truly takes a family to get everything ready.
Note from Melissa: I love that sweet centerpiece idea. Sandy has an upcoming book that features many simple, inspiring ideas like this one. I was honored to endorse the book and I’m excited to see her encouraging women to open their homes and entertain with grace.
