When our children were small, we owned a family beach house on the Oregon coast where we spent many weekends and holidays. We no longer keep a separate vacation property to visit, but now we live in a home with a view of the sea. Returning to our own “beach house” every day feels special in every season.
I especially love the small guest room pictured here. I wrote most of my latest, not-yet-released book in this room. (It shares a title with Joanna Gaines’ new book HomeBody — a coincidence that made me laugh — but it’s about a different topic. I’ll share more details soon.)
This room has become a quiet escape within our home. I’m happiest at home, so sometimes all I need is a peaceful corner to retreat to. With the energy of loud dogs and boys around the rest of the house, it’s a real treat to close the door and relax in here. Do you have a similar spot where you can get away for a while?
The sign on the wall was custom made by Between You and Me Signs. I originally planned to give it as a gift but enjoyed it in this room until I could deliver it. I collect a few signs and pieces of meaningful artwork with encouraging quotes and verses — I find that well-chosen art adds warmth and personality to a home.
Hope you all have a wonderful 4th of July (for our U.S. friends)!

PS — speaking of coastal vibes, you can spot our new plantation shutters in some of these photos. I’ll share more about the shutters in future posts, including where we ordered them and what we like about the shades and blinds we chose for our home.
