Update: my new kitchen with a covered range hood!
If you enjoy cooking, use a gas range, or simply dislike food odors drifting through the house, a high-quality range hood can make a big difference. In our last two kitchen remodels I added new range hoods and they transformed both the look and the function of the space.
Before making any decisions, it’s worth researching your options. You want a ventilation hood that complements your design and provides adequate power for your stove. Consider how the hood will be installed, whether you’ll vent outside or use a recirculating configuration, and what CFM (cubic feet per minute) rating is appropriate for your range. A good contractor can help clarify choices and ensure proper installation.
While function is crucial, style matters too—often almost as much. When we moved into our current home I started collecting ideas for the kitchen and quickly grew fond of the look of covered range hoods. They bring a refined, cohesive appearance that can suit many kitchen styles, from modern to farmhouse.
Having never owned a covered hood before, I enjoyed researching different designs and finding inspiration. I’m still refining the exact design I’ll use, but the images below show a range of beautiful approaches that might spark ideas for your own kitchen.
