Step Black!? Sometimes my titles are a little goofy, I admit it, but the idea behind this one is worth a look.

I’ve been browsing design sites and magazines, and one trend kept popping up: stairs painted solid black. At first I didn’t notice how common it has become, but seeing the same concept repeatedly made me stop and think.

Have you ever considered painting your stairs black? I mean truly black — deep and saturated.

Here are a few reasons I like the look. Black stairs create a bold, modern contrast with lighter walls and railings. They can make a staircase feel intentional and graphic instead of just functional. For homes where stained treads are worn or mismatched, painting the steps black is an economical way to refresh the space without a full rebuild.

Beyond aesthetics, black painted stairs can be surprisingly practical. They hide scuffs and wear better than lighter finishes and bring a crisp visual line through an entry or hallway.

This is also an approachable project for a confident DIYer. The key is preparation and patience: sand the surfaces smooth, prime appropriately, and apply thin, even coats of a durable floor or trim paint. Allow adequate drying time between coats and let the finish cure fully — a week or more of light use is ideal — so the paint hardens enough to withstand regular foot traffic.

Thinking about making the switch?

Will you step up to black stairs, or prefer a softer, lighter shade?

Coming up tomorrow, Melissa will share a dramatic red staircase before-and-after, discuss maintenance for wood and painted steps compared with carpet, and outline her plans for remodeling her own staircase — which, spoiler alert, involve black steps too. Stay tuned.
