Jenna created an adorable, budget-friendly mini makeover using a $10 corkboard and inexpensive patterned fabric. She sent in this note about her project:
Like everyone else who writes in, I LOVE the blog! I’ve picked up a ton of project ideas here (and from the Reader Redesigns you feature), so I wanted to share mine. My husband and I have been introducing small pops of green into our blue, beige, and espresso living room. When I needed fabric to re-cover some patio cushions, I saw an easy opportunity at the fabric store. We found this mail sorter/key holder/cork board on clearance at Kohl’s for about $10, but the plain cork wasn’t working for our decor. For roughly $1 worth of fabric, some ribbon, and a bit of spray adhesive, I customized it in under an hour. I followed an online tutorial for the basic technique and adapted the trim to fit our style. It was a fast, inexpensive way to freshen the room—perfect for a small weekend project. – Jenna

This quick transformation highlights how small updates can make a big visual impact. The patterned fabric adds color and personality, while the ribbon trim creates a polished, finished edge that elevates the simple corkboard into a decorative accent. The finished piece blends with Jenna’s existing palette and introduces the green accent she wanted without overwhelming the room.
Why this works:
- The base piece was inexpensive and readily available, making it a low-risk starting point for a DIY makeover.
- Using a small amount of fabric keeps costs minimal while offering a wide range of style options—patterns, textures, and colors can be swapped to suit any decor.
- Ribbon or other trim conceals edges and adds a custom, finished look. It’s an easy detail that boosts perceived value without a big investment.
- The whole project took less than an hour, so it’s approachable for beginners and great for last-minute refreshes.
If you’re inspired to try something similar, here are a few quick tips to get a clean result:
- Choose fabric with a tight weave so it stretches and adheres cleanly across the cork surface.
- Trim excess fabric and secure the edges on the back of the board before adding decorative ribbon to hide raw edges.
- Use a spray adhesive formulated for fabric and craft projects; apply evenly and press firmly to avoid bubbles or loose spots.
- Consider coordinating the fabric and trim with an accent color already present in the room for a cohesive look.
This project is a great example of how a small, thoughtful update can refresh a room affordably. Thanks to Jenna for sharing her photos and instructions—proof that inexpensive upgrades can deliver big style.
