Spring has arrived in Seattle and we’ve been enjoying every bit of the blue skies and warmer days. The sunshine nudged us outdoors to create a welcoming little oasis on our side patio—freshened up with just a few seasonal additions.

Style a Small Outdoor Space

I don’t feel the need to replace everything every season. A layered approach over time is how I create rooms I love. For this space, a few new pieces and accessories gave the patio an easy spring refresh.

For example, our World Market outdoor sectional and cushions are five years old. We moved the set from our previous home and it’s still in excellent shape. I recommend World Market furniture for good reason—well-made pieces at a great value.

How I Care for Outdoor Cushions and Rugs

See tips for keeping cushions and rugs clean and dry in the patio FAQ linked in the sources below.

Here’s what’s new on our patio:

We added a compact coffee table that’s perfect for morning coffee, casual meals, and serving friends outdoors. A new punchy blue rug and navy-and-white striped pillows (Sunbrella fabric) set a nautical tone that feels right for our home.

If you’re new here, our backyard faces the Puget Sound, so a coastal-influenced palette makes sense and complements the view.

This bold patterned rug brings the seating area together and adds personality. Layering rugs is something I love to do—each one defines a zone while the combination creates visual interest.

The striped cushion on the rug is actually a dog bed and it’s already a favorite. Our dogs, especially Lily, love lounging outside, so adding pet-friendly touches keeps everyone comfortable.

A couple of blue side tables give each seat a convenient surface for drinks or plates—handy because part of the sectional sits a little farther from the coffee table.

The large palm that used to live in our living room is enjoying spring outdoors. The raised planter on a stand makes the plant feel intentional and elevates the overall arrangement.

Using multiple rugs helps define the porch and conversation areas. The striped rug marks the spot just off the kitchen porch while the bolder rug anchors the main seating area, making it the focal point.

Repetition is a simple design tool I use to make spaces feel cohesive. Even when pieces are different—rugs, pillows, umbrellas—repeating colors, fabrics, or shapes ties the whole look together. String lights are another repeating element that unifies the patio.

I also added lantern hooks near the gate to showcase battery-operated votives. They’re a safe, charming way to add soft light to the garden area without worrying about open flames.

Soon the garden by the gate will be full of peonies, white climbing roses, and jasmine. I’m looking forward to the blooms and the scent—they’ll be a sensory treat.

I’ve been enjoying time outside every day—relaxing in the sun, feeling the breeze, and appreciating the fresh air.

I’m fond of the solar-powered string lights strung across the fence—they’re attractive by day and will be lovely at night once they’re fully charged. I’ll share photos of the evening glow when I have them.
