Our dining table has long been one of the most seasonally decorated spots in our home. I enjoy dressing it for the holidays, but I prefer a gentle, understated nod to the seasons rather than dramatic, all-or-nothing changes. I like to savor the transition days and keep things layered and relaxed.

Instead of swapping everything at once, I gradually add a few seasonal pieces and remove others as the weeks go by. That way I can continuously nest and putter around the house, enjoying small updates that reflect the current time of year.

Recently Wayfair invited me to take part in a challenge: create a holiday table using five items they offered. I thought it sounded like a fun opportunity and a great nudge to finally get my table styled. I selected a few items from their list and combined them with pieces I already own to create a unique tablescape.
The items I selected were the following:

I like to build a theme that isn’t strictly seasonal. For this table I mixed silver and gold metallics as a neutral foundation, then layered in small seasonal touches. Metallic pieces are versatile and work well across fall and winter holidays, so I often keep classic metallic items on hand to reuse year after year.

The result is an attractive but informal blend of current seasonal elements. An eclectic mix of chairs keeps the look relaxed and comfortable, which suits our casual style.

I included a touch of the sea, which I love year-round, along with hints of fall and Thanksgiving, finished with holiday sparkle. The metallic silver bowl exceeded my expectations; it’s food-safe, which is a bonus, and for this tablescape I filled it with mercury glass ornaments for a festive centerpiece.

For a playful touch I hung gold ornaments from fishing line attached to the lantern above the table. The mirrored orbs catch the light and create a whimsical focal point over the setting.

I also used a beautiful amber vase to display dried corn husks — a fresh seasonal take on the traditional bouquet. Those seasonal pieces can easily be swapped after Thanksgiving for more winter-specific items like a snowman motif or a trio of small trees.

Have you thought about how you could decorate your table for the season?
Creating a layered, metallic-based tablescape lets you celebrate multiple seasonal moments without a complete overhaul. Small switches — adding natural elements for fall, ornaments for the holidays, or beachy accents for summer — keep your table feeling fresh and personal.
