LonnyI love shingled houses. Their textured siding and classic lines give a home warmth, character and a sense of history. Whether covering an entire façade or appearing as an accent around dormers, gables or a cozy porch, shingles add depth and personality in a way that painted clapboard or stucco rarely does.
Shingled siding is high on my dream-home wishlist. It works across styles—from relaxed coastal cottages to more formal, traditional estates—because shingles can be styled, stained or painted to support the overall aesthetic. They weather beautifully, gaining patina and softening with age, which many homeowners find desirable.
I tend to favor gray shingles for their subtle, elegant tone that complements stone, white trim and natural wood. Gray shingles read as sophisticated and timeless, grounding a design without calling too much attention to themselves. White shingles are another favorite; they feel fresh, crisp and bright—especially suited to seaside cottages and Hamptons-inspired homes.
Even small areas of shingle cladding transform a home’s exterior. A shingled entryway, a flared shingled dormer, or a chimney surround can create focal points that draw the eye and break up large expanses of siding. These touches are an easy way to introduce texture and architectural interest without a major renovation.
When choosing shingles, consider scale and pattern. Narrow, uniformly cut shingles offer a refined look, while staggered or hand-cut shapes provide a more rustic, handcrafted feeling. Pair shingles with complementary trim colors, traditional hardware and simple landscaping to reinforce the intended style—whether you’re aiming for coastal charm, classic New England elegance, or vintage-inspired Victorian detail.
Maintenance is part of the appeal: natural cedar or durable composite shingles will age differently, and paint choices can extend their lifespan and appearance. With the right material and finish, a shingled exterior will remain beautiful for decades, aging gracefully and retaining its curb appeal.
Shingled houses feel inviting and timeless. Their mix of texture, shadow and form creates an exterior that’s quietly interesting from every angle. For me, that combination makes shingles one of the most charming and enduring siding choices.
