IIf you love small spaces or live in one, you know how important thoughtful planning is. When one room has to serve several functions, creative solutions and flexible furnishings make all the difference.
My daughter recently moved into her first apartment and it’s incredibly charming. She’s learned how to fit a dining area into her living space and developed several practical tips for making a small home feel open and functional.

Hi friends, it’s Courtney here. Decorating my new apartment has been a lot of fun. I’m slowly settling in and finding the best ways to maximize every square inch. Even though the place is small by some standards, it feels surprisingly roomy because everything has a purpose.
After years of living in a tiny bedroom, it’s a treat to have a kitchen, living area, workspace, and a guest spot—even if they all share the same open space.

I was so excited about my first place that I bought a dining table months before I moved in. My mom even used it temporarily as an end table—she loved it so much I worried she wouldn’t give it back. I picked a small, versatile table that would work in almost any layout, and it’s proven to be a great choice.
Small space tip: Invest in flexible furniture.
A compact table like this doubles as a side table, a dining spot for up to four people, extra kitchen prep surface, or a crafting area. It’s a hardworking piece that suits many needs.

I use the table daily for meals and work. It’s perfect for hosting friends—proof that you don’t need a separate dining room to gather around a table.

My next purchase was a set of Windsor chairs. I’d had my eye on them for a long time. They fit the table perfectly but are also easy to move for extra seating in the living area or at a desk.

The round table and rounded chair backs help the space breathe. Without sharp corners, traffic flows more easily and the area feels less cramped.
Small space tip: Choose the right shape and scale to maximize both style and space.

Lighting transformed the ambience of my living area. For a while I had no lamps, and the space felt dark at night. Adding a floor lamp warmed the room instantly—what a mood changer!

The floor lamp also provides a soft glow that reaches the dining spot without taking up much space.

Small space tip: Floor lamps warm up a room while using minimal floor space.
Marble mugs, table and chairs styled for daily use.

I enjoy collecting dishes and table accessories I love. Even with a small collection, each item brings joy and purpose. I’d rather have a handful of pieces I truly use and appreciate than cabinets full of things I don’t.
Small space tip: Keep only what you need and love. Less stuff, more style.
These thoughtfully chosen pieces add personality while keeping clutter to a minimum.

Simple accessories make a kitchen feel complete.

One great feature of the table is its two drop leaves. You can place it against a window, wall, or sofa to make the footprint even smaller when you need more floor space.

Small space tip: Drop-leaf and nesting tables maximize usable space.

You might recognize a tufted ottoman that has been used in my family for years. It’s excellent as a coffee table because it softens the room and doubles as extra seating when guests come by. Adding a tray creates a stable surface for drinks.

Small space tip: Use ottomans as a coffee table and extra seating. Add a tray for a stable surface.

I’m delighted with how the room is shaping up. The combination of flexible furniture, layered lighting, and curated accessories makes the apartment cozy and functional.
Thanks for stopping by. I’ll be back with more updates and a few new additions I’m planning.

PS. My mom has been updating her house as well and often repurposes items to give rooms a fresh feel. Her creativity is inspiring.
