Seaside Day Trip: One-Day Itinerary and Things to Do

We don’t travel far these days, but we love taking short staycation day trips close to home.

Knowing how quickly summer passes, my husband and I have started a weekly summer ritual: a quick, often spontaneous visit to a nearby spot we enjoy. These outings are low-key, easy to plan, and give us a little season-sized break without the stress of a full vacation.

Most of our day trips aren’t staged like a long holiday. That’s part of the appeal — less planning, less expense, and more freedom to go when a free afternoon opens up or we’re already headed off the island for errands. A good day trip can happen on a whim, and that spontaneity is exactly what makes summer feel lighter and more relaxed.

When a whim strikes or we find a window of opportunity, we head to one of our nearby destinations. Even a short stop at a beach, a waterfront park, or a favorite café can feel like a small escape — a chance to be present and enjoy summer without turning the day into a big production.

I used to share my “Out to See” notes here on the blog as a way to remember and recommend the little local places we love. Those posts were a fun throwback to childhood adventures — I still remember going “out to sea” in a little rowboat at my grandparents’ lagoon — and now I like to document these more grown-up, everyday escapes.

To celebrate an old-school blogging tradition and my 19th blogging anniversary, I’ll be sharing a few of our local outings this summer. Some will be longer day trips and others just quick pauses in an ordinary day. Either way, they’re simple ways to savor the season and find small moments of joy.

Today’s adventure was to a little coastal town called La Conner.

My favorite shop there is Restless and Refurbished, which blends old and new pieces and brings in European antiques and unique finds that are a delight to browse.

If our home were larger, I’d bring home pieces like those on a regular basis. The shop is full of character — layered textiles, well-loved wood, and small decorative pieces that make you want to slow down and imagine them in a room of your own.

One of the things I treasure about living in the Northwest by the sea is the unhurried pace. A midweek visit to a beach or a few shops in a charming town can feel almost private — like the place is yours for a few hours. Summer brings more visitors, of course, but weekday escapes still feel quiet and restorative most of the time.

Small local trips like these are great for recharging without the logistics of a longer vacation. They’re also perfect for discovering new corners of familiar places — a hidden bench overlooking the water, a bakery with exceptional pastries, or a shop that inspires a fresh idea for the house.

Do you have a favorite summer day-trip destination you return to? I’d love to hear about the places you visit to relax, explore, or simply change your view for a few hours.
