Wanna come with me on a drive by on San Juan Island?
Or more like a walk by — the slow, relaxed pace that makes a short getaway feel like a small vacation.
I felt like I’d been away from my blog and friends forever, so when my husband and I suddenly had the chance to slip away to a bed and breakfast on San Juan Island, we took it. I couldn’t announce where we were going at the time (a little mystery helps), but it was a welcome break.
With a busy life that includes running a business and serving at church, time together alone is rare. In fact, this was likely the first significant trip we’d taken as just the two of us in about 18 years. Week-long getaways aren’t something we do often, so this felt luxurious.
We left at the end of a hectic week: I temporarily paused the blog, drove a couple of hours, then enjoyed an hour-long ferry ride across to San Juan Island. My daughter was recovering well from her appendectomy, and my parents kindly came to watch Jack the puppy, so we could truly relax. We had a leadership conference later in the week, but the first few days were entirely for rest and exploration.
I loved the B&B and the colorful details that gave it so much personality.
The landscaping around the homes in Roche Harbor was incredible — a mix of textures, shapes, and colors that kept drawing me back for another look.
When I get up close to charming houses I half-expect someone to pop out the door and laugh — but I couldn’t resist getting close to this porch with its teal-green roof. It was irresistible.
This blue house completely swept me off my feet, even though it wasn’t finished yet.
Absolutely fabulous, right? I wondered who the new owners might be. Maybe one day they’ll invite me in for a tour once they’ve settled.
Suddenly switching gears: besides admiring lovely houses, we visited an alpaca farm. Those animals are hilarious — playful and a bit chaotic, much like siblings at times.
Back to charming spots: one restaurant triggered a sense of deja vu, reminding me of familiar childhood places — cozy, memorable, and full of character.
The hotel we passed was quietly elegant, with manicured gardens and a harbor full of boats. It felt like the kind of place frequented by people who enjoy leisurely afternoons on the water. No judgment — I wouldn’t mind a yacht either; I even saw a multimillion-dollar boat in the harbor that made me daydream.
The antique garden in front of the hotel was stunning. I could have lingered there for hours, simply admiring the thoughtful plantings and textures.
One unusual flower smelled unmistakably like chocolate. I was surprised — I’ve never encountered a bloom that carried that scent so clearly.
We also visited a lavender farm. Predictably, it smelled exactly like lavender — calming and satisfying.
There’s nothing quite like wandering charming streets, popping into small shops, and lingering over a cup of coffee. Those slow moments are what make a trip special.
As someone who has always loved the sea, strolling the harbor and watching the boats remain my favorite part of any island visit.
Good memories, lovely place.
Where have you escaped to this summer? I’d love to hear about your summer adventures!
