Quick DIY Closet Curtain with Driftwood Rod: Fast Fix

Closet curtain with DIY driftwood rod

I recently realized I never shared a small hallway update I made months ago. I may have posted it briefly on social media last fall, but I never published the full story here. So, here it is now.

THE PROBLEM:

We had an upstairs hall closet door that wouldn’t close properly. It stuck and jammed all the time, so one day we removed it. That left the closet contents completely exposed to the hallway, which was less than ideal.

For a long time the opening just sat there — months, maybe even a year. It wasn’t something I was proud of, but life and other priorities kept it on the back burner.

PERFECT VS. PRACTICAL:

Ideally I would have installed a new closet door or finished the interior so it looked good open, but that would have taken time I didn’t have. Finding the right door, getting it installed, or doing a full makeover inside the closet were not realistic options at the moment.

Instead of letting the opening remain an eyesore, I decided to choose a simple, fast solution before the holidays.

A CREATIVE, SIMPLE SOLUTION:

I found a jute-striped linen curtain and used a long piece of driftwood as a makeshift rod. I attached the curtain loops to the driftwood, then suspended the driftwood from jute cord and small nails in the wall.

It took only a few minutes to hang, but the effect was immediate: the closet is hidden, and the hallway has a bit of rustic charm.

THE TAKEAWAY:

Sometimes a quick, creative fix is better than waiting for a perfect solution. Perfectionism can delay progress; in many cases “simple and done” solves the problem and feels good. This small project hid clutter and added personality to the hall without a big investment of time or money.

I’m glad I chose to act rather than wait for the ideal option. The curtain does the job and adds a casual, welcoming touch to the space.

What small project could you finish right now if you stopped waiting for the perfect solution?

The upstairs hallway is painted Studio Taupe (Behr All in One), the warm brownish-gray color I plan to use through the main rooms of the house. It’s one of my favorite neutrals in our lighting.
