It’s time to show off the July {ditto} DIY challenge!
Happy Monday! The {ditto} DIY challenge is back. Once a month, ten bloggers recreate a design element inspired by haute couture, translating it into practical, approachable home projects. The goal is to inspire readers to bring refined design into their homes while keeping their own style. You’re invited to join the challenge: create a project and add it to the {ditto} DIY link-up.
The ten hosting bloggers include:
Darlene @ Fieldstone Hill Design
Ruth @ Living Well Spending Less
Cindy @ Skip to My Lou
Jen @ Balancing Beauty & Bedlam
Edie @ Life in Grace
Rachel @ Surviving the Stores
Karin @ Trophy Mom Diaries
Lauren @ I am THAT Lady
Kelly @ View Along The Way
Melissa @ The Inspired Room
This month’s theme is Framed Fabric. Our inspiration was a framed pair of Ikat fabric art.
The {ditto} DIY Challenge:
Frame some fabric! Any fabric, any method—then display it beautifully.
What did I make? I waited until the last minute, partly because I have very few blank walls left and I prefer projects that serve a purpose. In the end I decided to make a wipe-off memo board/welcome sign for our front porch using a inexpensive placemat from Target and a simple frame. While fabric would have been more literal to the theme, the placemat offered the right look and easy durability for outdoor use.
I considered a placemat that more closely matched the inspiration image, but worried text would be hard to read. Instead I chose a striped rubber/plastic placemat and adapted it to fit a frame.
Instructions: Trim the placemat slightly so it fits the frame, insert it in place, and use the frame glass as your writable surface. A chalk pen or dry-erase marker on the glass makes the board reusable and easy to clean.

It took five minutes or less. Quick, practical, and useful—perfect for a front porch welcome sign or a handy household memo board.

Now it’s your turn! Link up your framed fabric (or fabric-inspired) projects and join the {ditto} DIY party. Browse other entries for ideas and encouragement, and consider next month’s challenge hosted by Darlene for more design inspiration and tips on incorporating framed fabric into your home.
This simple design DIY challenge will turn ordinary items into thoughtful decor. Design is all about the details.
