Do you have a room in your home that becomes your cozy retreat for winter? The Snug has become mine. I use it year‑round for work, but in colder months I stay inside more, so I made this space extra warm and inviting to enjoy all season long.
Would I love a fireplace in The Snug? Absolutely. There are always improvements I’d like to make, but a room doesn’t have to be perfect to be comfortable, functional, and welcoming today.
What is a Snug? A snug is a small, cozy room filled with soft furnishings where you go to relax and find peace.

We didn’t plan to decorate here for Christmas, but leftover winter greenery found its way into the room and it instantly felt festive. I prefer a simple approach—just a few carefully placed touches make the space feel cozy without overdoing it.
I’ll keep this short since many of us are busy with holiday preparations, but I’ll answer a few questions readers often ask about The Snug and share more photos so you can see our furniture arrangement and how the room works for everyday life and special occasions.
(I usually note sources throughout and include a list at the end for reference.)

If you missed my previous post about this space, you can find the earlier update showing the whimsical winter bed and initial touches.
Most furniture in The Snug is a collection of pieces we already owned. Moving into a smaller home meant finding new places for things we loved. Rather than buying everything new, we used what worked and layered in a few items to make the space cohesive.

We plan to tweak the room over time, but our priority was to move in and make it comfortable with what we had. We did add a few new pieces—a floor lamp, wicker storage trunks, a pleated lampshade, pillow covers, artwork, bedding, and two smaller rugs—to tie the different elements together and increase comfort and function.

The rattan daybed has been a favorite for years, moving from room to room in previous homes. The tufted ottoman, leather loveseat, my mom’s desk, a teal chair, and a rattan bookshelf found at a flea market all came together here. Many of these pieces have history and versatility, which makes them perfect for a multi‑use space.
If you’ve followed along through our moves, these items might look familiar. We try to maximize use of what we own and invest thoughtfully when additions are needed.

To make The Snug more functional, we arranged furniture, rugs, and accessories to create distinct zones: a TV and seating area, a workspace with a desk, a guest sleeping nook, and flexible seating for family game or movie nights. A few storage pieces hold bedding and supplies, keeping the room tidy and practical.

We tested this “use what you have” approach over Thanksgiving and it worked wonderfully. The room felt warm and welcoming whether I was working alone or hosting a dozen family members for a movie night. That flexibility makes it ideal for this season of our life.

Do you have a similar multi‑purpose room? I hope this encourages you to use what you own and adapt a space to suit your needs. It’s fine to bend design rules when something practical and comfortable works better for your family.
I look forward to spending the winter in The Snug and sharing more of it with you soon.
