A home feels most inviting when it pleases our senses and works for the way we live. The textures, warmth and small moments of joy we bring into our rooms shape our style. Combining unique elements makes a space feel cozier, more welcoming, and comforting.
Every piece contributes to the whole, which is why it’s rewarding to rearrange what you already own and explore different combinations until the room feels right.
Fall nesting is one of my favorite seasonal rituals. The changing season is a perfect opportunity to refresh and consider how well our home reflects our current tastes and needs. Your style should serve your life, not the other way around.
One of the best things about a personal style that evolves is that you can experiment. You can go bold with temporary changes, or pare back to a simpler version of yourself. What feels right in one season or in one house may shift in another — much like the way our clothing reflects our mood, the atmosphere of a home can change with the seasons.
Your signature style is the mood you choose to create using the elements available to you at any given time. It can evolve as your life and resources change.
Even if everything in your house isn’t the one perfect version of your dream, your home can still honestly reflect who you are right now. We’re all works in progress, and our homes should accommodate that journey.
Enjoy your home as it is and consider how it can best nurture your family.

Some changes may be more ambitious, but many meaningful updates are simple and non-permanent. Swapping or mixing colors, textures and accessories can dramatically shift how a room feels.
Your personal style doesn’t have to be confined to a label—give it room to breathe so it can grow and adapt with you and your surroundings.
Style is deeply personal. You don’t need a certain house or other people’s approval to express who you are. Defining your signature style is a chance to decide what feels right for you now.
When we moved into this house, I used our two Dutch doors as a starting point for establishing my signature style. We couldn’t remodel everything at once, but the doors helped me re-envision the home. One small change often inspires the next.

Once the Dutch doors were installed, they became part of the house’s character and helped define its style. But if structural changes aren’t possible where you live, there are always alternatives. Non-permanent items like pillows, rugs, lamps and accessories can set the tone just as effectively.
Right now I have a rattan daybed in the living room. It may be unconventional and not permanent, but it suits our season and even the dogs love it. It became a signature piece because it’s used and enjoyed—if it were merely decorative, it wouldn’t reflect our family.
Your style can and should evolve. Life changes—new homes, remodels, children, careers and shifting routines—all call for reassessing how your space supports you. Allow your home to expand and change to reflect new seasons of life.

Change doesn’t need to be dramatic. Rearranging what you already own or adding a few new accessories can bring renewed energy into a room without a major investment.
Just as we step into roles—student, partner, parent, creator, retiree—our surroundings may need to adapt. An evolving style helps restore balance, bring joy, and make room for the season you’re in.
To let your style reflect who you are now, stay flexible and open to change.
When we once moved from a small cottage to a large Tudor, a friend peeked through the front window to make sure she’d found the right house. She saw an entry cabinet stacked with books and a glowing lamp and immediately recognized my touch. Even in a different house, the arrangement of familiar elements made it feel like ours.
As you arrange furniture and accessories this fall, focus on the elements that will invite you into the season and into the home you are living in right now.
Build up, pare down, or remix what you have to suit your mood and needs. That’s how an evolving, authentic style is created.

What element in your home could be a style setter for this season? Maybe a rug, a furniture piece, an architectural detail, a pattern, a pillow or a layered mix of textures and colors?
Which combinations of color and texture will make you feel most comfortable and welcomed in your home this fall?
