Outdoor Wall Lantern Ideas: Styling Tips and Installation Guide

non-electric wall hung lantern + styling ideas

Who would have thought a small bunny holding a candle inside a lantern by the front door could bring so much delight? Simple touches like this make the home feel welcoming, and lately I’m savoring those little moments more than ever.

I ordered the lantern earlier in the year and we finally found time to hang it. The piece is designed to be easy to install—the back has pre-drilled holes—so even those of us who aren’t handy can manage it. We used a standard drill and a masonry bit to set screws into the brick; the installation was straightforward.

I wanted a charming lantern near our door but running electricity to that spot wasn’t practical right now. A non-electric, wall-mounted lantern solved the problem and gave us a seasonal display that doesn’t take up precious porch space. It’s fairly large, so it makes a strong visual statement and offers plenty of room for seasonal décor.

Once it was hung, I placed a little bunny candle holder inside—an item I’ve had for years—along with a battery-operated taper candle and a mix of faux and real greenery for spring. It feels so inviting and cheerful; a small detail that welcomes guests and brightens our porch.

One of the best parts is how versatile the lantern is. I plan to change its contents throughout the year—mini pumpkins in fall, pinecones and candles in winter, fresh blooms in summer. It’s similar to fillable glass lamps that can be styled in many ways, and I’ll have fun experimenting with different looks.

I’ll share some styling ideas below and note where I found similar pieces to recreate the look.

Ideas for decorating lanterns:

  • Copper string lights for a warm, twinkling glow
  • Battery-operated pillar candles for a classic feel
  • Mini pumpkins or gourds for autumn styling
  • A small bouquet of fresh or faux flowers for spring and summer
  • Pinecones and sprigs of evergreen in winter
  • A little potted plant or succulents for a living touch
  • Shells and sand for a coastal vignette
  • Moss, greenery, and natural elements for texture
  • A taper candle in a small candleholder or seasonal ornaments

I love how a single, changeable lantern can bring seasonal personality to a small porch without crowding the entry. It’s a simple way to make an entrance feel cared for and inviting.

Enjoy the inspiration! I’ll keep updating the lantern with new looks and plan to share photos when I change it up, including evening shots so you can see the glow at night.

The lantern can also be hung by its handle on a hook if you prefer that look. It’s a flexible piece that works on a wall or from a hook, depending on your space and style.

Wall lanterns with fall decor

I’m already planning a cozy, fall-inspired display. The lantern is perfect for “nestifying” with autumnal accents and layered textures.

I love the look of two lanterns flanking a door, though our small porch only has room for one. Still, a single well-styled lantern makes a charming statement.

I’ll update this post when I restyle the lantern and include a nighttime photo so you can see how welcoming the light is after dark.

*UPDATE* Over time I’ve styled the lantern for different seasons—summer bouquets, fall pumpkins, spring flowers, and holiday arrangements—and I’ll continue to share those variations.
