Today I’m excited to show you our small outdoor storage shed
and how we are using it to get organized.

Fall is on its way. While there’s no urgent need to pull out rain boots just yet (we even had a brief rainstorm the other morning), it’s a good time to think about preparing the yard for wetter weather. Proper storage for cushions and outdoor textiles makes seasonal transitions easier and keeps everything in better shape.

When the rainy season returns, patio cushions need a dry place to live. For years we simply tossed our outdoor cushions, pillows and rugs into our main shed for the winter. This spring, however, my husband pointed out that my cushion collection had grown so large we either had to declutter (not an option!) or find a better storage solution. He also wanted to free up space in the main shed for garden tools and our new lawn mower.

After considering several options, we decided to apply the same approach we use inside the house: add a dedicated storage unit outdoors. Instead of one big shed holding everything, a small, purpose-built shed could store cushions while leaving the main shed for tools and equipment.

We had a few requirements. It had to be affordable—there was no point spending a fortune to protect inexpensive cushions. It needed to be compact enough to fit in a corner of the yard without dominating the space. And it had to be attractive enough to blend with our outdoor area and simple enough to assemble in an afternoon.

We ruled out a custom “She Shed” for now—lovely as that idea is—because it didn’t meet our size and budget goals. Instead, we looked for a small pre-made shed that was easy to assemble. We’re not expert DIYers, but we do try projects that match our skill level. My husband enjoys outdoor projects, so I focused on options he could build without fuss.

We found a compact shed that fit all our criteria: affordable, attractive, and simple to assemble. It was small enough to tuck into a corner but spacious enough to hold all our white cushions and other seasonal items. My husband assembled it himself in one afternoon, and now the main shed is free for lawn care gear and tools.

Choosing a second, smaller storage unit allowed us to organize by purpose—outdoor soft goods in one place and equipment in another—much like using separate cabinets inside the house. The new shed keeps cushions dry and protected, helps extend their life, and gives us an organized, clutter-free yard.

This little shed met our expectations. It looks good in the yard, it was easy to put together, and it holds exactly what we needed. It’s a practical, budget-friendly solution for seasonal storage, and it freed up valuable space in our main shed so we can better organize tools and garden supplies.
