Organizing and Beautifying My 2014 Plans

Greetings. I’m finally recovering after a long bout of the flu. I don’t think I’ve ever been sick so many days in a row — it was awful. I lost almost all my energy and motivation, and for a while I wasn’t sure I’d feel like blogging again. But I’ve pulled through, and as of today I’m officially back.

I’ll admit something a little embarrassing: I still had most of my Christmas decorations up. I know — who still leaves holiday decor in mid-January? Apparently I do. I didn’t even have the desire to take it down until recently. That’s how sick I was — naps became my priority, and I’m not usually a nap person. But that’s behind me now, and the holiday decorations are finally coming down.

With a bit more energy yesterday I started thinking about my home goals for the year. I’ve already mentioned working on a craft closet in the guest room, and that idea sparked a broader focus on organizing and decluttering the rest of the house. Aside from our pantry, many closets and dressers aren’t functioning the way I’d like. Some areas are improved — like my pegboard tool area — but others clearly need an overhaul.

I want to create more efficient, attractive storage throughout the home and make the most of the space we have. Our house is a comfortable size overall, but individual rooms tend to be small and we don’t have many closets or built-ins. The main floor has only one small closet, and while each bedroom has storage, none are used to their full potential. They could also use a style refresh to feel more welcoming. My little goal is simple: organize, beautify, and be able to take photos of closets that actually look great.

How a room looks and functions affects me more than I expected. When a space is organized from top to bottom, I’m motivated to keep it that way. If everything has a place and the room is visually pleasing, I feel calmer and more likely to maintain it. For me, an organized home is a beautiful home.

This year I plan to tackle the house room by room. I’ll assess how each space functions and identify storage improvements. In some rooms I’ll add new furniture — dressers, shelving units, or consoles — and in others I’ll refresh existing storage to make it both prettier and more practical. I’m picturing wall organizers, creative shelving solutions, and many more hooks to maximize vertical space.

Some rooms, like the dining room, have almost no storage, so I’ll need to get creative. Built-ins would be ideal in some places, but they might not fit the budget right now. In other areas I’ll empty closets and restart with better systems. My aim is not only to make spaces more attractive but to reduce excess and end the year more organized than I began. I may not finish every corner of the house, but starting now should yield meaningful progress.

I hope you’ll follow along on this organizing journey — maybe you’ll feel inspired to tackle your own spaces. I’m a little nervous to post this because it makes me accountable, but in a good way. This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and I’m ready to make it happen. I’m looking forward to the changes.

But first, I need to put those Christmas decorations away.
