Organized Spice Drawer Ideas for a Tidy, Accessible Kitchen

Organized Kitchen

We’ve been enjoying cooking in our newly remodeled kitchen for the past eight months. During the remodel we often cooked outside or used an electric skillet in the laundry room, so having a dedicated space for daily meals is a real pleasure.

We try to eat at home as much as possible. While we appreciated dining out during the renovation (and still do—Seattle has great restaurants), cooking at home lets us accommodate vegans, semi-vegetarians and dairy-free eaters, control ingredients, eat healthier and save money.

Transitioning to more home cooking demanded better organization. Enter the Brother P-Touch D210 label maker. This compact labeler quickly became my organizing sidekick. If you haven’t used one, be warned: it’s delightfully addictive.

Knowing what we plan to cook, having quality ingredients on hand and finding items quickly are essential to preparing healthy meals. While planning the kitchen renovation, we considered how to make meal prep easier. That led us to install shallow drawers on either side of the stove and add a nearby Lazy Susan cabinet for pots and pans to maximize space and efficiency.

Because we buy in bulk, our drawers had many small bags and jars without clear labels. Unmarked bags and grocery-store twist ties made it hard to know when supplies needed replenishing. That disorganization slowed meal prep—often we’d open bags to smell or taste contents just to identify them.

Although I’m enthusiastic about preparing daily meals, I’m not a confident cook. If a recipe called for a missing ingredient, I’d often give up and order takeout. After too many recent pizza deliveries, I decided to upgrade our organization.

With the P-touch, labeling is fast and easy: type a name, print the label, stick it on, and a few minutes later your drawer or jar is clearly identified. I love that I can preview labels before printing, which removes the fear of mistakes, and I enjoy trying different fonts, frames and symbols to personalize each label.

The P-touch offers a variety of customization options—multiple fonts, dozens of frames and hundreds of symbols—so you can make labels that suit your style. Its TZe laminated tape is water-, fade- and temperature-resistant, making it ideal for kitchen use.

Now that the kitchen is organized and labeling is underway, I have many more plans to label other areas of the house. Labels have already streamlined meal prep and reduced waste by making it easier to spot what needs restocking.

How could you get more organized with labels?

Consider using a label maker to identify pantry items, spice jars, bulk food bags, storage containers and shelves. Clear, consistent labels speed up meal prep, help with inventory and keep your kitchen running smoothly.

You can purchase the P-touch D210 labeler from major retailers and office supply stores.
