In January I set a goal to work through my home room by room, focusing on how each space functions and how it’s organized. That included considering new furniture or built-ins when needed, but also paying attention to smaller details—hooks, drawer organization, and simple fixes that improve daily life.
Aiming high helped: even if I don’t reach every single corner of the house, I’m making noticeable progress and moving much farther forward than if I hadn’t tried.
After five years in this house (a personal record for me!), I finally feel ready to refine the details. I’ve learned how our family actually lives here—where clutter accumulates, why it happens, and what doesn’t work. Understanding those patterns makes it easier to find solutions that change how we use the space.

As I focus more on function, the home is also becoming calmer and more put together. Small, functional updates are translating into a more serene, cohesive feel in each room, and I’m enjoying the results.
This stage of updates is especially fun because changes show up more quickly than in the early years of settling in. Adding a cabinet or a well-placed piece of furniture can completely change how a room feels. I’ll share more about those projects in another post.
Today I want to share a tiny, five-minute makeover that made me unexpectedly happy.

For years our baking drawer looked casual and functional but a little haphazard—fine, but not particularly lovely. This week I realized that with just a bit of rearranging and a few items I already had around the house, I could make it much nicer.

I didn’t buy anything or build an elaborate system. I simply looked at what I had and reused a few pieces in new ways. An old basket corralled loose items, my pretty measuring cups now hold muffin liners, and a three-section serving dish became a charming divider for measuring spoons. That small shift made the drawer feel more purposeful and attractive.
Now every time I open that baking drawer I smile. It took only minutes to create a small moment of beauty in a regularly used space—proof that tiny projects can be inspiring and motivating.
Isn’t it satisfying to organize and beautify a single drawer and enjoy the instant payoff?
Try this quick challenge: find one drawer to refresh this week and make it prettier than it was.
