A few weeks ago I had an unexpected epiphany that led me to buy a rattan serving cart, and I couldn’t be more pleased with how it transformed our kitchen and dining area. When we designed this space I only planned for the dining table and chairs—no extra furniture. But sometimes a room needs to be lived in before you truly understand how it will come together.
Sometimes you don’t really know how a room will come together until:
1) you start trying different arrangements, or
2) you spend time in the space rather than just looking at plans.
This rattan serving cart found a perfect spot in our home by pure chance, and it feels meant to be. In this post I’ll share why it works for us, how we plan to use it, and what it adds to the overall design of the space.
Although I love freestanding furniture for storage and personality, we intentionally kept built-ins as the main storage solution when designing the kitchen and dining room. The three main rooms are compact and flow into each other; two walls are taken up by French doors, which left limited wall space. Built-ins were the most efficient choice to maximize floor space and improve function in an open layout.
That decision helped make the rooms feel spacious and practical. Still, once we moved in and began to live in the space, I realized a small piece of freestanding furniture could add warmth and versatility without compromising the layout.
The rattan cart wasn’t in the original plan, but once I stood in the room and pictured it next to the island and table, the idea felt right. Sometimes rooms reveal what they need over time—if you’re patient, the right piece will announce itself.
I had written about rattan bar carts before and never imagined we’d have room for one here, but seeing the space in person changed everything. Rattan has always felt warm and familiar to me—my mom had a rattan cart for years—so the aesthetic was already a match for our home.
To test the idea, we brought in a similar cart we own for the porch. It was slightly too large for the spot, but it confirmed that a rattan cart would be functional and visually pleasing there. Soon after, I found a smaller rattan serving cart in the right color and scale, and I ordered it right away (bonus: it was on sale and I had a credit). It truly felt meant to be.
The cart fits the space perfectly—neither too big nor too small—and helps bridge the kitchen and dining areas. Its warm tones echo the cutting boards, wood floors, and metal fixtures, while adding a soft contrast to the natural stone and creamy cabinets. The result is cozy, inviting, and balanced, as if the piece belonged there all along.
I believe one of the best ways to design a room is to allow it to evolve. Leaving room for unexpected finds can lead to a more personal, layered space. This rattan cart is a small example of how a home can feel more complete when you let it grow naturally over time.
My goal for the kitchen was a welcoming, classic, timeless feel—something that looks and feels like it has always belonged to our family. That sense comes not only from careful design choices but from living in the space and letting it accumulate items and memories over time. Each new piece helps the room settle into a comfortable rhythm.
Although the kitchen and the cart are new, day by day the room is growing into the familiar family space we imagined.
How will we use the rattan cart and what’s on it now?
I’m excited to style and use the cart seasonally and functionally. Right now it holds everyday items that are useful to have near the table: a stack of striped cloth napkins, a couple of small rattan trays, trivets, coasters, a compact wood cutting board, a vase with flowers, and wood-handle flatware that’s both pretty and easy to grab during meals. The lower shelf is perfect for leaning framed art or displaying potted plants and seasonal decor. The cart is portable, so we can wheel it into place for serving dishes and desserts during gatherings or move it to another room as needed.
Happy start to the fall nesting season! We’re enjoying settling in and making the house feel like home. This cozy time of year is ideal for sharing little updates and seasonal touches. Thank you for following along—I’ll be sharing more soon.
