Master Bedroom Makeover: Progress Update and Design Reveals

For months I’ve been slowly refreshing our master bedroom, and after five months of projects around the house, the space is finally coming together. I set out to reorganize and redecorate so the rooms flow better and only include items I truly love. Working on several spaces at once has actually helped create a cohesive look throughout the house.

The photos show how the room looked before—a tired, uninspiring space that felt like a temporary holding area. For a long time I avoided the room because it needed attention, but a practical problem forced a change: our elderly dog began having daily accidents on the carpet. That convinced me it was time to refresh the room and address both aesthetics and function.

The first step was to empty the room and apply fresh paint. We replaced the dated wall color with Polished Limestone, a soft gray with a hint of blue that feels soothing and calm. Because the ceiling is vaulted, we painted it the same color to create a cozy, unified feel. The result turned the room into a restful nest; a wood ceiling might be a future addition, but for now the paint gives the right atmosphere.

As part of our larger project, we also installed hardwood floors in several rooms, including the bedroom. Before the new flooring went down, the subfloor was sealed to eliminate any lingering odors, so the space now feels clean and fresh. The Natural Hickory prefinished hardwood looks fantastic and has transformed the room’s character. I love walking on the new wood floors and appreciate how they bring warmth and charm.

I also rearranged existing furniture rather than buying everything new. I moved an iron bed frame to my daughter’s room and brought the sleigh bed from the former guest room into the master. Shopping the house saved money and created a better fit for the space. I balanced the wood textures with soft, velvety curtains and kept the bedding that has served us well for years—a durable matelassé coverlet and shams. Small new accents, like two bird-patterned pillows and a giant grain sack pillow, add personality without clutter.

For light control, I installed bamboo roll-up blinds. They’re affordable, simple to fit, and give the clean look I wanted while allowing layered window treatments. Layers, textures, and details are important to the room’s style, and these blinds add the right touch of natural texture without dominating the space.

Nightstands are still on my list; the current ones are different heights, which makes the lamps look awkward. I’ve been slowly saving for a matching pair, and in the meantime I’m enjoying other updates, like a small blue patterned rug placed beside the bed. It’s a Dash & Albert rug I moved from the entry, and the smaller rug works well here since full area rugs can be higher maintenance with pets in the home.

Because we live in a more remote area with limited shopping options, I’ve done most of my shopping online. Online retailers have made it easy to find pieces that work with the room’s palette and style. One happy surprise is how well the new wood floors coordinate with the stone tile in the adjacent bathroom, which helps tie the spaces together visually.

I have plans for the long blank wall opposite the bed and will reuse some items I already own to create interest there. My approach is to add layers gradually so the room evolves naturally. With paint, new floors, window treatments, and carefully placed accessories, the master bedroom now feels comfortable, cohesive, and peaceful—exactly what I wanted.

*UPDATE: In a later update I shared more storage and decorating ideas for this room and how it continued to evolve. The bedroom has grown more refined over time as I added practical storage solutions and layered décor.
