“Being in a garden is very relaxing and peaceful
as plants are restorative to our health and emotions.”
I recently shared photos of my lilacs on my Instagram stories and was surprised to learn that some regions don’t have lilacs. If you’re among them, you’re missing out on one of spring’s most fragrant gifts. If only this post could be scratch-and-sniff—lilacs smell incredible. Later in this post I’ll mention a favorite way to enjoy floral scents at home.

When we moved into this house three years ago, I had no idea the yard already held large lilac trees. The first spring here was a wonderful surprise: the yard filled with the sweet scent of purple lilacs, followed by white ones on the other side of the lawn. The fragrance felt heavenly.
As I explored the garden I found even more: a magnolia, camellias, hydrangeas and rhododendrons. Each plant brings its own unique fragrance and character to the landscape.

I love puttering in the garden—perhaps even more than tackling a house project. I’m far from a professional gardener, but I enjoy caring for plants and spending time outside. Every day I walk around the yard to breathe in the scents, unwind and admire the blooms. I also enjoy cutting stems and bringing them inside to brighten the rooms.

Finding all of these blooming trees and shrubs felt like a dream. In previous homes I’ve been fortunate to inherit mature plants, and it’s always been a joy. Gardens create calm and are restorative for both mood and health.

If you enjoyed Lily’s Garden, you may remember that I planted fragrant herbs and climbers there—lavender, lemon verbena and honeysuckle among them. It’s developing into a lovely, scented spot that Lily enjoys as much as I do.
In the coming weeks I’ll share more of our garden spaces. I’m particularly excited about the climbing white roses, peonies in pinks and whites, and jasmine that are coming along. The garden fills the senses with joy. Follow me on Instagram to see videos and stories of the plants, flowers, the house and our pups.
Tell me about your yard or garden in the comments! I’d love to hear about your plants or plans.
On the topic of pleasant scents and plant benefits, I use essential oils daily to naturally scent my home and support family wellness—better sleep, immune support, emotional balance and natural skincare. I no longer rely on many candles because diffusing oils gives the home a fresh, natural aroma.
When you purchase an essential oil kit, you may receive a welcome packet and a helpful guide, and you can connect with communities focused on natural wellness. I enjoy sharing tips, recipes and hosting free classes with others who are exploring essential oils and healthier home practices.
