Install Patio French Doors from a New Bedroom: New Home Project Guide

Happy news — we have several new home projects planned for this year. I’ve held off on major updates in a few key rooms because I wanted to be sure that when we did more than paint, the changes would truly reflect our style and feel right for our family. I didn’t rush the decisions; I’ve been collecting ideas and weighing options for years, sometimes impatiently, sometimes carefully.

Now I finally know the direction I want to take, and I’m excited to share the inspiration and plans with you. We’ve nearly finished a few small projects in the lower level that I’ll show soon, along with an update to our stairs. There are many ideas and stories behind these plans, so for now let’s start with one simple update I’m eager to make.

Recently I shared this concept in my Instagram stories. The top photo above is the inspiration for our new master bedroom. In short, we plan to move our master from its current spot to the other side of the house — currently our son’s room — so we can add French doors that open onto the side patio.

If you remember the long saga of installing the side patio, you’ll understand why I’m excited. That project had its challenges, and it took time to recover from the hassles. Now I’m energized by new ideas that can make the patio and the rooms that open onto it feel even more special.

Currently the patio is accessible from the Dutch door in our kitchen, but relocating the bedroom will let us add a set of French doors like those in the inspiration photo. That direct connection will allow us to step out from the bedroom onto our own little patio for morning coffee, an evening meal, or to watch the sunset over the water.

Practically speaking, we could enjoy the patio as we do now, but connecting it directly to the bedroom will make that experience feel more intimate and intentional. We don’t have room for a grand master suite, and I don’t want a huge space — I want a room that feels special. A small bedroom can be full of charm, and that’s the goal for this remodel.

We won’t be adding an upstairs peak like the inspiration photo, since we’re not building an addition, but our nearby round window gives a similar character and will help create the vibe I’m aiming for.

Tomorrow I’ll share lots of inspiration photos for patio doors!

In future posts I’ll outline plans for the new bedroom and bathroom, and share ideas to make the side patio more private and inviting. I’ll also show inspiration for our existing mint-and-pink bathroom, explain what we plan to do with the original master, and describe some exciting updates I’m considering for the living room to improve both character and function.

Thanks for following along with everything we’ve done to make this house feel like our home. I’m excited to watch it evolve as we add personality and thoughtful updates, and I can’t wait to share the vision for each change.
