Inspired by Pianos: How to Style a Piano in Your Home

In our previous home we had two baby grands — one in the living room and one in the dining room. One of them was a player piano, so even when no one was available to play, we could press a button and the house would be filled with music. Although we no longer own a piano, our home is still frequently alive with sound, whether from live guitar playing or songs streamed on our favorite station.

Music is a big part of our family life. My husband is a musician and our daughter sings, so there’s usually music in the background. We don’t always agree on the playlist — for example, while writing this my husband is practicing a much louder style than I prefer; I’d rather be listening to Mumford and Sons — but those differences are part of what keeps our home lively and personal.

We do miss having a piano. Beyond offering music, a piano brings warmth and character to a room: it’s both a functional instrument and a striking piece of furniture. Whether it’s a polished black grand, a painted upright, or a vintage wood piece, a piano often becomes the focal point of a living area and a gathering spot for family and friends.
