DECORATING INSPIRATION: RED

It’s almost Valentine’s Day!

With Valentine’s Day approaching, it feels like the perfect moment to celebrate decorating with red. I’ve always been drawn to red and have used it in many of my homes over the years. There’s something energizing and warm about the color that can transform a room.

Do you remember the red toile chair I had in my previous house? I adored that chair and the character it brought to the room. Although I still have a few red pieces now, I find myself missing more of that bold color in my current home—maybe it’s time to bring in more red accents or even paint a door or two.

Red offers so many possibilities. From deep crimson to bright cherry, the variations in shade and tone mean you can use it subtly or make it the focal point of a space. A painted door, an accent wall, textiles, or a single statement piece can all introduce red in different ways.

People tend to have strong opinions about red—some love its vibrancy, while others prefer to avoid it. Both reactions are valid; red can be dramatic and lively, but when used thoughtfully it can also feel cozy and refined. Consider your room’s lighting and the other colors you plan to pair with red—neutrals, navy, soft pinks, and natural wood tones often complement red well.

If you enjoy design blogs and room makeovers, you might already be familiar with Sarah’s House—she’s created some stunning rooms featuring red. Those spaces demonstrate how red can be layered with pattern and texture to create warmth and personality.

So, what do you think—red: yay or nay?
