How to Prevent House Shaking: Causes and Fixes for a Stable Home

Remember when I wrote about what I do when I hit a slump around the house? Sometimes I wander through the rooms wanting to change something, but I don’t want to spend money or tackle a big cleaning project. I just want things to feel fresh. When that mood hits, I do something simple but different: I rearrange.

Last week I moved a few things to new spots. When you live with the same layout and accessories for a long time, it’s easy to stop noticing them. To break that habit, I put some items away, brought others back out, and tried a few pieces in new locations. The goal wasn’t a major overhaul—just small, unexpected swaps to make the rooms feel renewed.

I even refreshed the coffee corner. The coffee maker stayed where it works best, though I nudged it slightly toward the center beneath the open shelf. I recently bought hammered copper Moscow mule mugs and they had been sitting on the dining table. I finally placed them on the shelf so I can enjoy seeing them every day.

I added a two-tiered stand to hold sugar and a couple of striped towels, which freed up counter space and added a tidy, layered look. A sketch my parents gave me after a trip to Budapest had been tucked away and collecting dust, so I cleaned and displayed it where I can appreciate it. Small personal touches like that make the space feel curated rather than cluttered.

There were a few stems of eucalyptus left from a spring front door basket, so I arranged them in a pitcher. The mix of warm wood tones, copper accents and fresh greenery created a simple but inviting vignette. I also gathered a few favorite cookbooks that usually sit on the other side of the kitchen, and relocated them to complement the new arrangement.

For a change, I even tucked the everyday coffee mugs into a drawer. I like seeing them on the counter, so they’ll likely return, but hiding familiar items for a while can help you notice other things. Even temporary rearrangements can spark creativity and make a space feel new. You don’t have to commit to a permanent look—experimenting can reenergize how you see your home.

What could you shake up around your house this week?
