Hi friends! It’s Michaela. I enjoy returning to The Inspired Room to share decorating and entertaining ideas. Lately I’ve been planning the Bloom Bash Workshop in Seattle this October, a creative event focused on blogging, photography, home design, florals, calligraphy and more. The workshop will be held in a historic mansion called the Rainier Chapter House, and that setting has me inspired by vintage charm and classic details. My personal style—updated farmhouse with vintage and eclectic touches—fits right in.

Rainier Chapter House

Planning an event in this mansion—a replica of George Washington’s Mount Vernon—made me notice the elements that give the house its character. Some of my favorite details include expansive wallpaper, large gilt mirrors, windows with personality, old shutters, lantern-style fixtures, rich woodwork, and stunning chandeliers. These are the kinds of features that instantly define a space.

As a design enthusiast and someone who studied interior design alongside Melissa’s daughter Courtney, I love diving into the history and architecture of places like this. A short description from the mansion itself captures its story well:

“Designed by Daniel Riggs Huntington, a well respected Seattle architect, this replica of George Washington’s beloved Mount Vernon home was built in 1925. Employed as the City of Seattle architect from 1912 until 1921, Huntington also designed the Fremont library branch, the Lake Union Steam Plant, several fire stations and the Washington Street Boat Landing.”

I still pinch myself that we get to host the workshop in such a beautiful venue. The mansion’s grandeur is inspiring, but you don’t need a large historic home to bring charm into your own space. Here are practical, approachable ways to add character at home:

  • Add unique lighting fixtures—mix styles or use vintage-inspired pieces.
  • Swap door hardware for interesting knobs and pulls.
  • Incorporate vintage finds—markets and thrift stores are great sources.
  • Display old books to create warmth and history on shelves and tables.
  • Use wallpaper to give a room personality, even on an accent wall.
  • Introduce exposed or faux wood beams for texture and depth.
  • Paint the front door to create an inviting focal point.
  • Install molding or trim to elevate flat surfaces and add architectural interest.
  • Change switch plates and outlet covers for a finished look.
  • Layer rugs, textiles, and accessories for richness and warmth.
  • Consider built-ins to add both storage and character to a room.
