Hi friends! I’m Michaela, and I’m excited to share some decorating and entertaining inspiration with you here at The Inspired Room. I’ve been planning the Bloom Bash Workshop in Seattle this October — a creative event focused on blogging, photography, home design, floral arranging, calligraphy, and more — and choosing the venue has made me fall in love with old, charming architectural details all over again. Our workshop will be held at the Rainier Chapter House, an historic mansion with a distinctly vintage character, and the setting naturally steers the workshop’s decor toward timeless, elegant touches that complement its history. My personal style leans toward updated farmhouse and vintage eclectic, so this venue feels like home.

Planning an event in a mansion modeled after George Washington’s Mount Vernon has made me consider the small elements that give a space personality. The Rainier Chapter House is rich with character: expansive wallpaper, large gilded mirrors, windows with unique mullions, original shutters, lantern-style fixtures, wood trim, and stunning chandeliers. These features create a warm, stately atmosphere that feels both refined and inviting. They remind me that charm often comes from a collection of thoughtful details rather than a single dramatic element.

For those who love design as much as I do, a bit of history is irresistible. The mansion’s story is part of its appeal: designed by Daniel Riggs Huntington in 1925 as a replica of Mount Vernon, it reflects the craftsmanship and design priorities of its era. Huntington was a prominent Seattle architect whose work shaped many civic buildings in the region. That context adds depth to the space and makes it an inspiring backdrop for a creative workshop.
I’m thrilled that the Rainier Chapter House will host our event. Its historic charm is a constant source of inspiration, but you don’t need a mansion to bring character into your own home. Small, intentional changes can create that same sense of warmth and personality. Here are practical ideas to add charm on any scale:
- Choose unique lighting — statement fixtures or vintage pendants add instant personality.
- Install attractive door knobs or drawer pulls to elevate cabinetry and doors.
- Hunt for vintage finds — small antiques or reclaimed pieces introduce history and texture.
- Display old books or treasured volumes to create a lived-in, layered look.
- Use wallpaper strategically — a feature wall or powder room can feel special without overwhelming a space.
- Add wood beams or trim to bring architectural interest and warmth.
- Paint your front door a welcoming color to make a bold, friendly statement.
- Install molding or baseboards to give rooms a finished, intentional appearance.
- Swap out plain switchplates and hardware for more decorative options.
- Layer textiles — rugs, throws, and pillows add comfort and visual depth.
- Create built-ins where possible to maximize function and showcase collections.
