Colorful & Eclectic Home Office Decorating
Ilove my newly decorated home office. It’s a space that feels truly mine—a cozy retreat from the busy household. For years I wanted a place to step away, recharge, and surround myself with color, cherished objects, and things that make me smile. That quiet, colorful nook finally exists and it has made a huge difference.
When my daughters and I first closed the door and sat in the room together, we felt an instant sense of peace. It’s a small space, but it’s full of life and personality. I didn’t buy everything new; instead I mixed treasured pieces I already owned with a few new finds that brought the room together. The result is a happy, eclectic space that feels both organized and inspiring.
While some people prefer minimal, neutral rooms, I find comfort in color, pattern and objects that carry memories and scent. The colors and patterns energize and calm me at the same time. My new Anthropologie curtains are a favorite splurge—they instantly lift the space. A bright orange cushion on an antique swan chair, a sketch of a family vacation, a favorite candle, and small whale-themed accents all add to the room’s personality.
The walls here are boldly painted in a deep blue (Glidden Rich Navy), a choice that contrasts with the neutral tones used elsewhere in the house. Choosing one room to go bold can be a great way to explore color without overwhelming the whole home. The mood in this office turned out exactly as I hoped: cozy, creative and inviting. Not surprisingly, it’s become one of the most popular rooms in the house—everyone wants to be here.
My desk is a longtime favorite that I didn’t need to replace. Reusing pieces allowed me to keep storage and functionality intact while saving money. A window view of the trees adds calm and inspiration as I work.

I enjoy mixing old and new: the antique swan chair adds character that new, coordinated furniture can’t replicate. The tufted “Cute as a Button” chairs are just as charming and perfect for my girls to use when they visit to chat or write on their blogs.
Small details make a difference: a vintage owl bookend, a turtle trinket box for paperclips, and metallic accents bring texture and shine into the space. I also brought in a cherished file box to keep things organized and within reach.
To update dark wood bookcases without painting them, I lined the backs with map paper and added blue knobs. The maps brighten the shelves and give the pieces a refreshed, custom feel. A small whale figurine perched on a shelf adds a playful touch—our own version of “whale on a shelf.”
Quirky accents, like a tower of white elephant figurines, add conversation-starting charm. I keep cute pens in a mason jar—small, delightful details that make everyday tasks more enjoyable. My favorite Anthropologie mug and blogging notebook stay close by for those moments when I need a comforting ritual.

Fresh flowers and small bouquets add warmth and life. Layering a round Pottery Barn rug over patterned carpet created extra coziness and draws attention to the chandelier, which has been saved for the perfect room—it fits beautifully above the room’s center.
I covered the back of a lawyer’s bookcase with blue polka dot fabric to soften its seriousness and add a whimsical, feminine touch. Contrasts like this—serious and playful, old and new—create a collected, layered look that feels genuine and lived-in.
The sea life prints in mixed metal frames bring cohesion to one wall, and swing-arm reading lights on dimmers provide soft mood lighting. A small whale art print above the mirror is a sweet reminder of family favorites and adds to the room’s playful vibe.
Small treasures—like a vintage sailboat—bring delight whenever I notice them on the shelves. The overall makeover blends function, personality and comfort. It’s a place where I can work, create and simply breathe.
My Home Office Makeover!
This is my finished home office. I’ve already started new projects inspired by elements from this room and I have more makeovers planned. I’ll share sources and answer questions in another post if there’s anything you want to know.
