BHG – Kitchen

In honor of Mother’s Day this weekend, I’ve been thinking about where my love of beautiful homes began. It’s clear it began with my mom. She transformed our houses into warm, inviting spaces through thoughtful decorating, special holiday tables, and numerous remodels. Her example shaped the way I care for and design my own home.

Growing up, she taught my sister and me simple rituals that made a big difference: polishing the bathroom sink after each use, setting an attractive table for sit-down dinners, and hanging full curtains so windows felt grand and elegant. She remodeled with an eye for light, adding windows whenever possible so rooms would feel bright and welcoming. These habits and values have influenced every house I’ve lived in and the choices I make today.

Kylee and Lance - The Inspired Room

We’re especially excited right now because my oldest daughter, Kylee, and her husband Lance, have just bought their very first home.

After years spent in a dim basement apartment, they’re eager to begin this new chapter. They’ve just picked up the keys, and I’ll share photos and details soon. Their place is a small, three-level townhouse in Seattle, and we’re looking forward to exploring creative ideas for making the most of compact spaces. Expect plenty of practical, stylish solutions for small-house living over the coming weeks.

My mother’s influence is something I cherish, and I’m grateful to now be passing that appreciation for home on to my daughters. Simple routines, attention to light, and thoughtful touches can transform an everyday space into a place that feels loved and lived-in.
