Holiday Decluttering and Cozy Puttering Ideas for Seasonal Calm

Simply Inspired Holidays: Puttering and DeclutteringNew England Home

puttering-and-decluttering

I love this season for a bit of gentle puttering and decluttering. Clearing out items that no longer serve you makes space for decorations, gatherings, and the simple pleasures of the holidays. A small, intentional effort can make a noticeable difference in how your home feels.

Today my plan is modest and achievable: remove, donate, or rearrange ten items. That could mean moving a lamp to a cozier corner, donating a stack of unread magazines, returning stray mugs to the kitchen, or simplifying a crowded shelf. Small changes like these create breathing room and let the things you love stand out.

If you prefer a focused approach, try these simple steps:

  • Set a short timer — 15 to 30 minutes — and concentrate on one room or one surface.
  • Choose a category: textiles, books, décor, or kitchenware. Pull everything of that type into one spot to see what you really use.
  • Ask three quick questions about each item: Have I used it in the last year? Do I love it? Does it fit my current life? If the answer is no, consider donating, recycling, or storing it away.
  • Group similar items together and remove duplicates. A neat, intentional grouping instantly improves a space.
  • Finish by wiping surfaces and finding a home for remaining items so clutter doesn’t reappear.

Decluttering doesn’t need to be dramatic. Puttering—moving a few things, adjusting a vignette, or switching seasonal accents—lets you refresh a room without overwhelming effort. Little adjustments often reveal what you truly want to display for family and guests.

Beyond aesthetics, clearing space has emotional benefits. A tidier home can reduce stress, help you focus, and make hosting less frantic. When decorations are easier to access and surfaces are clear, preparations for gatherings feel calmer and more enjoyable.

If you’re looking for motivation, set a clear, small goal like I did: ten items. Tell a friend, make a short checklist, or take before-and-after photos to see the change. Celebrate the progress, even if it’s incremental—every item you donate or relocate is a step toward a more peaceful home.
